Western Caribbean cruise or Eastern? How to pick your Caribbean region

Western, Eastern or Southern: the short version

Cruise lines split the Caribbean into three routes, and the route shapes the trip more than the ship does.

Western Caribbean

Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Belize City, Roatán in Honduras, Jamaica (Falmouth, Ocho Rios or Montego Bay) and Grand Cayman. Usually 4 to 7 nights. Mayan ruins, reef snorkeling and the most sailings.

Eastern Caribbean

St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, San Juan in Puerto Rico, Tortola and often a Bahamas private island. Usually 7 nights. Beaches, shopping and more sea days from Florida.

Southern Caribbean

Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire (the ABC islands), Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Kitts and Grenada. 7 nights from San Juan, 8 nights or more from Florida. Fewer ships and the best odds of dry weather.

Our pick: a Western Caribbean cruise is the best first Caribbean trip and usually the cheapest. The Eastern route suits beach days and a mix of U.S. and foreign islands. The Southern route is the one we’d book for a second Caribbean cruise, especially from San Juan, where you skip the long sail down from Florida.

Best time to go

• December to April: the most settled weather and high season. Fares climb over the holidays and spring break. See our Christmas and New Year cruise picks if you’re booking the holidays.
• May and early June: a good shoulder season, hotter but quieter.
• Late June to early August: busy with families. Hurricane season has started, but its peak is still ahead.
• Mid-August to mid-October: the peak of hurricane season and usually the lowest fares of the year. More on this below.
• November: calmer again, with fair prices until the holidays.

Hurricane season, honestly

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.

On a cruise, that usually means a swapped port, an extra sea day or a new order of stops rather than a cancellation, because ships can move away from a storm. A storm near Florida can also delay boarding or the return day.

The Southern Caribbean has an edge. Aruba’s tourism authority says the island sits outside the hurricane belt and hasn’t taken a direct hit since records began in 1851, though passing storms can bring rain and rough seas.

If you book between August and October, buy good travel insurance and don’t book a same-day flight home.

Typical length and price

• 3 to 5 nights: mostly Bahamas trips, but some 4- and 5-night sailings reach Cozumel or Grand Cayman. See our short cruise guide.
• 7 nights: the standard Western or Eastern trip, with three or four ports.
• 8 to 12 nights: the Southern Caribbean from Florida, or any Caribbean route from the Northeast.

On price, the Western Caribbean is usually the cheapest per night because so many ships compete for it. Eastern routes cost about the same or a little more, and longer Southern trips cost more in total. Holiday weeks and spring break are the most expensive; September and early December the least. Departure ports

Most Caribbean cruises leave from Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa) or from Galveston in Texas. If you don’t want to fly to Florida, these ports also work:

• New York: Royal Caribbean sails from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, including 7- to 12-night Southern Caribbean trips on Odyssey of the Seas. Expect two sea days each way before the first warm port.
• Baltimore: Carnival’s winter program runs longer Caribbean sailings, up to about two weeks for the Southern Caribbean.
• New Orleans: year-round Western Caribbean trips with Carnival, plus seasonal Norwegian and Royal Caribbean sailings. Cozumel and Roatán are the usual stops.
• San Juan, Puerto Rico: the best start for the Eastern and Southern Caribbean, because you’re already in the islands. Royal Caribbean is the only line with year-round service. Norwegian Prima starts weekly sailings to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Kitts in November 2026, and Norwegian Viva adds Aruba and Curaçao trips in winter 2027–28. • Tortola, British Virgin Islands: boat trips to the Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Southern Caribbean

• Aruba: long white beaches and dry, steady weather.
• Curaçao: Willemstad’s colored waterfront and good snorkeling.
• Barbados: beaches, rum and the start of some luxury sailings.
• St. Lucia: the Pitons and rainforest.
