Cruise to Bahamas 2026–2027: which line, which island, which month
The best cruise to the Bahamas for most people is a 3- or 4-night sailing from Florida that pairs Nassau with a cruise line's private island, so pick the line by its island: Royal Caribbean for water slides, Disney for young children, Carnival or MSC for the lowest fare. If you'd rather not fly, Royal Caribbean and Carnival sail there in about a week from New York, Baltimore and Norfolk. The driest months are December to April.
Book it if
- You have a long weekend and can get to a Florida port.
- You want a beach day on a private island where food and loungers are part of the fare.
- You live near New York, Baltimore or Norfolk and want a week in the sun without a flight.
Skip it if
- You want a new country every day. Look at the Caribbean instead.
- You can only sail in August, September or October and a changed itinerary would spoil the trip.
- You dislike crowds. Nassau can have six ships in port on the same day.

Best time to cruise to the Bahamas
The Bahamas are warm all year, so ships sail every week. What changes is the rain, the sea temperature and the price. The figures below are long-term averages for Nassau.
- December to April: the dry season. Daytime highs run from about 77°F in January and February to 82°F in April, and April has the fewest rainy days of the year. The sea is at its coolest, about 75°F from January to March. Christmas, Presidents’ Day week and spring break are the most expensive sailings of the year. Our January 2027 and March 2027 guides compare the Bahamas with other winter trips.
- May and June: hotter, with highs of 84 to 88°F and the sea warming to about 82°F by June. Rain picks up, mostly as showers. Good value before schools let out.
- July and August: the hottest months, with highs around 90°F and 84°F water. Ships are full of families. See spring break and summer cruises.
- September and October: the wettest stretch and the peak of hurricane season. Fares are usually the lowest of the year, and the water is still warm.
- November and early December: highs back to about 80°F, fewer rainy days, and quiet ships between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Our pick: late April to early June, or the first two weeks of December. The weather is good and the ships are not at holiday prices.
Hurricanes: the Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. Cruise lines move ships out of a storm’s way, so the usual result is a changed itinerary, not a cancelled cruise. A Bahamas trip can lose its private-island day or swap Nassau for another port. If the island day is the reason you’re going, don’t book the peak weeks.

Ship guides for the ships named here: Wonder of the Seas, Disney Wish, Disney Fantasy, Disney Destiny, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Getaway, Mardi Gras and Celebrity Reflection.
Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea
Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line no longer sails under that name. It was rebranded as Margaritaville at Sea in 2022. Its ship Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sails from the Port of Palm Beach in Florida, mostly on two-night trips to Freeport on Grand Bahama. It’s the shortest Bahamas cruise you can book. We don’t have prices for it.
Which private island
On a short Bahamas cruise the island day is half the trip, so compare the islands before the ships.
- Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean): the busiest and the one with the most to do, including a water park that costs extra. The best pick for older children and teenagers. When an itinerary is sold as a “Perfect Day” cruise, it means the ship stops here.
- Royal Beach Club Paradise Island (Royal Caribbean): a beach club in Nassau that took its first guests on December 23, 2025. It is not included. You buy a day pass, which covers food, drinks, loungers and the water ferry from the pier.
- Celebration Key (Carnival): Carnival’s destination on Grand Bahama, opened in July 2025. A pier extension finished in June 2026 lets four ships dock at once, with up to 13,000 guests a day. Twenty Carnival ships from 10 U.S. home ports call here, and Princess ships start calling in late 2026.
- Half Moon Cay (Carnival and Holland America): the calmer of Carnival’s two stops, now sold by Carnival as RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay.
- Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian): a new two-berth pier means ships dock instead of ferrying guests ashore by tender. Great Tides Waterpark, with 19 slides, opened on September 4, 2026. Check whether the water park is in your fare before you book for it.
- Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (Disney): Disney’s two islands. Which one you get depends on the sailing.
- Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve (MSC): MSC’s own island, on most of its trips from Florida.
- The Beach Club at Bimini (Virgin Voyages): adults only, like the ships.
For families choosing between the first and the sixth, see Disney vs Royal Caribbean and our family cruise picks.
Typical length and price
- 2 nights: Margaritaville at Sea only, from Palm Beach to Freeport.
- 3 nights: the classic weekend trip, Friday to Monday, with Nassau and one island day. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Norwegian, MSC and Celebrity all run them from Florida.
- 4 and 5 nights: the same two stops plus a sea day, a second island or Key West. Often cheaper per night, since they sail midweek.
- 7 and 8 nights: a week from New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, New Orleans or Mobile. Expect two sea days each way and two or three stops.
How much is a cruise to the Bahamas? Less than any other cruise from the U.S. Short sailings on Carnival, MSC and Norwegian have the lowest fares, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cost more, and Disney is far above the rest: in the fares we checked in October 2026, a 3-night Disney sailing cost several times a 3-night Carnival one. The table below shows those fares, with the date. The advertised fare leaves out taxes, port fees and daily gratuities, which matter more on a cheap 3-night trip than on a long one.
Cheap cruises to the Bahamas are easiest to find in September, October, early December and January after New Year. Bahamas cruise deals closer to departure are covered in our last-minute cruise guide, and our 3 to 5 night cruise picks rank the short trips.
Cabins: on a 3-night cruise you spend little time in the room, so an inside cabin is a reasonable way to save. A balcony earns its price on the 7- and 8-night trips from the Northeast, which have four sea days.
Departure ports
Most Bahamas cruises leave from Florida: Miami, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Tampa and Palm Beach. We don’t cover Florida ports on this site, but that is where the 3- and 4-night trips are.
You can also sail from further north or west, on longer trips:
- New York: a New York to Bahamas cruise is a 7- or 8-night round trip. Royal Caribbean runs them from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Odyssey of the Seas in winter 2026–27 and Oasis of the Seas in 2027.
- Baltimore: Carnival Pride sails 7-day Bahamas trips all year, and Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has 8-night ones.
- Norfolk: Carnival sails 5- to 8-day Bahamas trips, on Carnival Sunshine until mid-May 2027 and Carnival Freedom after that.
- Philadelphia: Norwegian Pearl has a few 8-night Bahamas trips in February and March.
- New Orleans and Mobile: Carnival Liberty has 7-day Bahamas trips from New Orleans, and Carnival Valor sails 6- to 8-day ones from Mobile from 2027.
From the Northeast in winter, the first and last days are cold and the sea can be rough. That is the price of not flying.

Ports of call
- Nassau: the capital and the one real town on most itineraries. The port has six berths and a terminal rebuilt in 2023, and it handled more than 5.6 million cruise passengers in 2024, so expect company. A Nassau cruise day is usually spent at a beach, at Royal Beach Club if you’re on Royal Caribbean, or on a ship-sold excursion.
- Freeport, Grand Bahama: the stop for Margaritaville at Sea, on the same island as Celebration Key.
- Bimini: about two hours from Fort Lauderdale by fast ferry. Used by Virgin Voyages, and by Royal Caribbean on some trips from Baltimore.
- Private islands: see the list above. On many 3-night sailings this is the only stop besides Nassau.
Longer Eastern Caribbean routes often add one Bahamas island day to stops such as St. Thomas and San Juan. Our Caribbean cruise guide covers those.
Is the Bahamas safe for cruise passengers?
The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, and renewed that rating in late July 2026. Level 2 is the second lowest of four levels. The advisory says most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport, tells visitors to stay alert in the “Over the Hill” area of Nassau south of Shirley Street, and warns about jet ski operators. U.S. government staff are not allowed to rent jet skis from independent operators on New Providence or Paradise Island.
For a cruise day that means: stay in the port area, the main beaches or on a booked excursion, and don’t rent a jet ski on the beach. The private islands are run by the cruise lines for their own guests. Read the current advisory on the State Department’s travel site before you sail.
Cruise to the Bahamas FAQ
What is the best time to cruise to the Bahamas?
December to April for dry weather, with late April to early June and early December the best mix of weather and price. September and October are the cheapest and the wettest, and they are the peak of hurricane season.
How long is a cruise to the Bahamas?
Three or four nights from Florida, which is what most people book. From New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, New Orleans or Mobile it’s a 5- to 8-night trip, because the ship needs two days at sea each way.
Is there a day cruise to the Bahamas?
No cruise ship runs a one-day trip. The shortest cruise is two nights, on Margaritaville at Sea from Palm Beach to Freeport. For a day trip there is a ferry, not a cruise: Balearia Caribbean sails from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini in about two hours on some days of the week. A passport is required on the ferry.
Do I need a passport for a Bahamas cruise?
U.S. citizens on a cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port can travel with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. A passport is still the safer choice, because you need one to fly home if something goes wrong. See cruises without a passport.
What does a Perfect Day cruise mean?
It means the itinerary stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas. The beaches, pools and lunch are included. The water park and some other attractions cost extra.
Which is the best Bahamas cruise for a first trip?
A 4-night sailing from Florida with Nassau and a private island. Pick Royal Caribbean if you want the most to do, Disney if your children are small and the budget allows, and Carnival or MSC if price matters most.
