Norwegian Sky left the fleet in September 2026 for Cordelia Cruises in India, and Norwegian Sun is due to follow in 2027.

What Freestyle Cruising means

Freestyle Cruising is NCL’s name for how its ships run, and it is the main reason people choose the line.

• No fixed dinner time or table. You walk into a main dining room when you want, or book a time in the app. Nobody is assigned a table for the week.
• No formal nights. The dress code is resort casual every evening. You can dress up if you like, but you don’t have to.
• Lots of places to eat. Bigger ships have many restaurants, several included and more for a fee, so dinner feels more like a resort than a set routine.

The downside of freestyle dining is waiting for a table at peak hours on a full ship, and less of the “same waiter all week” service that traditional lines are known for.

The NCL fleet by class and size

NCL’s newest ships are the Prima class: not the biggest in the fleet, but the most modern. The Breakaway ships and Norwegian Epic carry the most guests. Older, smaller ships handle long voyages and the more unusual routes. Lists run from newest to oldest within each group, and guest counts are at double occupancy.

The next Prima-class ship, Norwegian Aura, is on sale now: about 170,000 gross tons and 3,879 guests at double occupancy, making it NCL’s largest ship. Its maiden voyage leaves Trieste for Barcelona on May 21, 2027, and from June 2027 it sails seven-day Caribbean cruises from Miami (Eastern Caribbean through October, Western Caribbean in winter 2027/28). NCL has no South America or Antarctica season in 2026–27. Norwegian Star returns to the region from December 2027 to March 2028.

Where Norwegian sails by season

• May to September, Alaska: seven-day round trips from Seattle on Norwegian Bliss, Encore and Joy (the 2027 line-up), plus one-way cruises between Vancouver and Whittier on Norwegian Jade. • All year, Hawaii: Pride of America sails seven-day inter-island cruises from Honolulu, with no sea days. Other NCL ships visit Hawaii on longer voyages.
• All year, Caribbean and Bahamas: mostly from Florida (Miami, Port Canaveral and others), with Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island, and Harvest Caye in Belize on many itineraries. New Orleans adds Western Caribbean trips in winter: Norwegian Breakaway in 2026/27 (it swapped with Prima, which moved to San Juan) and Norwegian Getaway in 2027/28.
• Spring to fall, Bermuda and Canada: from New York (Norwegian Aqua in 2026, Norwegian Luna from April 2027), Boston (Norwegian Breakaway in 2026 and 2027, with Canada and New England trips from late August to October) and Philadelphia (Norwegian Pearl).
• Fall to spring, Mexico: seven-day Mexican Riviera round trips from Los Angeles on Norwegian Encore, from October 2026 to April 2027 and again in winter 2027/28.
• April to October, Europe: the Mediterranean, Greek Isles and Northern Europe.
• Winter, far away: Asia (Norwegian Jade) and Australia and New Zealand (Norwegian Spirit) on the older mid-size ships. South America, with scenic cruising near Antarctica, returns in winter 2027/28.

What’s included and what’s extra

Included in every fare: the main dining rooms, the buffet, some casual spots, basic drinks such as water, coffee and tea, shows, pools and kids’ clubs.

Depends on the fare bundle: NCL’s bundle is now called Free at Sea (it replaced the More at Sea package). It adds an open bar drinks package, a set number of specialty dining meals by cruise length, 150 minutes of Starlink Wi-Fi and a shore excursion credit. Free at Sea Plus is a paid daily upgrade that adds premium drinks, Starbucks coffee, streaming Wi-Fi and the daily service charge. The contents change with promotions, so compare the bundle you’re offered, not the headline price.

Always extra: the daily service charge (Free at Sea doesn’t cover it; Free at Sea Plus does), specialty restaurants beyond any credit, drinks outside a package, the spa, many ride-style attractions and excursions.

The Haven: a gated suite complex with its own restaurant, lounge and sundeck on most larger ships. It’s NCL’s answer to MSC Yacht Club and Royal Caribbean’s suite perks.

What is an NCL Freestyle cruise?

Any Norwegian Cruise Line cruise. Freestyle Cruising is the line’s style: no set dinner time or assigned table, no formal nights and a resort-casual dress code every evening.

What is the best Norwegian cruise ship?

For most people, one of the Prima-class ships: Norwegian Luna and Norwegian Aqua are the newest, Prima and Viva are close behind and often cheaper. For Alaska, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore are the stand-outs thanks to their observation lounges.

Does Norwegian Cruise Line sail to Hawaii?

Yes. Pride of America sails seven-day cruises round trip from Honolulu, visiting Maui, the Big Island (Hilo and Kona) and Kauai. Because it is U.S.-flagged, it doesn’t need to stop at a foreign port, so it spends the whole week in Hawaii.

Does Norwegian go to Antarctica?

Not in 2026–27. Norwegian Star returns to South America from December 2027 to March 2028 on 15-night cruises between Buenos Aires and San Antonio (Chile), with scenic cruising near Antarctica’s Elephant Island but no landings. For landings on the continent you need an expedition ship.

Is Norwegian good for a first cruise?

Yes, especially if a set dining schedule sounds off-putting. Pick a Prima-class or Breakaway Plus ship on a seven-night route, and check which fare bundle you’re buying before you book.
