Norwegian Epic cruise ship: who it suits, where it sails and which cabin to book

Norwegian Epic is the NCL ship to book for a big, lively Mediterranean week or an affordable Caribbean cruise, especially if you're traveling alone. It has 128 Studio cabins, the Ice Bar and a long entertainment list. It sails from Port Canaveral in winter and from Barcelona and Rome in summer 2027, but it's an older ship, built in 2010.

Book it if

  • You're traveling alone. Epic has 128 Studio cabins and a private Studio Lounge.
  • You want a seven-day western Mediterranean cruise on a big ship in 2027.
  • You want plenty to do at night: shows, comedy, live music and dinner theater.

Skip it if

  • You want a modern ship with the newest attractions. Norwegian Aqua and Luna are the better pick.
  • Crowds bother you. This is one of NCL's highest-capacity ships.
  • You dislike paying extra for specialty restaurants, ticketed shows and the adults-only beach club.

Norwegian Epic was built at Saint-Nazaire, France, and delivered in June 2010. Reba McEntire christened it in New York. It’s 1,081 feet long and a one-off: no other NCL ship shares its class. Its top-heavy look has drawn criticism, but the design leaves a lot of room for entertainment venues.

Is Norwegian Epic good for solo travelers?

Yes, Norwegian Epic is one of the best mainstream ships for solo travelers. It introduced NCL’s Studio cabins, and it has 128 of them, with access to a private lounge for Studio guests. That gives you a place to meet other solo cruisers, and a cabin designed for one instead of a double room.

Studio guests still pay for the same extras as everyone else, so budget for them. Our best cruises for singles guide compares Epic with solo cabins on other lines.

Who else it suits

Night owls. Epic’s strength is what happens after dinner, with theater shows, comedy, Howl at the Moon and the Ice Bar.

Mediterranean first-timers. A seven-day cruise from Barcelona or Rome covers the western Mediterranean without much planning. Our Mediterranean cruise guide and Italy cruise guide compare the other lines.

Budget Caribbean cruisers. Winter sailings from Port Canaveral are often priced below NCL’s newer ships. Check the table below for dated fares.

Who should look elsewhere: families who want the newest attractions. Our family cruise guide has stronger picks, and Norwegian Aqua is NCL’s better ship for kids and teens.

What changed in Norwegian Epic’s 2025 refit?

Norwegian Epic finished a three-week drydock in May 2025. It enlarged the adults-only Vibe Beach Club, which replaced the Posh Beach Club, and refreshed the Kids’ Aqua Park, which took the place of SplashGolf. Eight new cabins were added on Deck 14, six balcony and two oceanview.

The Vibe Beach Club gained an extra hot tub, more lounge seating and private cabanas. NCL’s fleet page now lists Epic as refurbished in 2025. The refit didn’t change the ship’s basic layout, so expect a recently refreshed older ship, not a new one.

Standout features

  • Ice Bar: a 17-degree bar made of ice, and one of the ship’s best-known venues.
  • Aqua Park: water slides including the Epic Plunge bowl slide, two pools and hot tubs.
  • Spiegel Tent: theatrical dining and acrobatic shows, for a fee.
  • Epic Theatre and Headliners: Broadway-style shows, and comedy in a club that doubles as a live music lounge. NCL lists Burn The Floor and Ballroom Blitz among its shows.
  • The Cavern Club: Beatles tribute performances.
  • Sports complex: a climbing wall and ropes course.
  • Spice H2O: an adults-only space that turns into a DJ-led nightclub.
  • Mandara Spa: includes a Thermal Suite with a hydrotherapy pool.

Norwegian Epic cabins to pick and avoid

The best cabin on Norwegian Epic depends on who’s traveling. Solo guests should pick a Studio, on Decks 11 and 12. Couples and families should pick a midship balcony on a deck with cabins above and below. The Haven suits guests who want a quieter, gated part of the ship.

Pick:

  • A Studio if you’re alone. Compare the fare with a double cabin at the solo rate, because it isn’t always cheaper.
  • A midship balcony for the Mediterranean, where the cabin is your view of the coast.
  • The Haven for a private restaurant, the Courtyard Pool and an adults-only sundeck.

Avoid or think twice:

  • Cabins directly below the pool deck or nightlife venues, which can be noisy.
  • Cabins at the far forward or aft ends if you get seasick.
  • Any cabin marked as having an obstructed view; check the category description before booking.

Dining and activities

The included restaurants are Taste and The Manhattan Room (main dining rooms), the Garden Café buffet and O’Sheehan’s Neighbourhood Bar & Grill, which is open around the clock. Travel Extra lists the specialty restaurants as Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, La Cucina, Teppanyaki, Moderno Churrascaria and Wasabi.

Bars include Shaker’s Martini & Champagne Bar and Maltings Beer & Whiskey Bar. For kids, Splash Academy takes ages from 6 months to 12 years, and teens have the Entourage club. The Norwegian Cruise Line guide explains the Free at Sea fare bundles, which decide how much of this your fare covers.
