Norwegian Joy was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, and delivered in April 2017. It was designed for the Chinese market and spent its first two years sailing from Shanghai and Tianjin. In 2019 NCL spent about $50 million redesigning its public spaces for American guests and moved it to Seattle for Alaska. A further refit in early 2024 added a Thermal Suite at the Mandara Spa, expanded the adults-only Vibe Beach Club and brought in Starlink internet.

Who it suits

Alaska first-timers. Joy has the features that matter on an Alaska cruise: a big Observation Lounge at the front of the ship for glacier and fjord days, plenty of indoor space for cool, wet weather and enough to do on sea days. NCL’s Seattle ships are why the line features in our best cruise lines for Alaska.

Families with older kids and teens. The two-level race track and the big-ship range of shows and restaurants keep teenagers busy. See our family cruise guide for other options.

Short-break cruisers in Florida. From November 2026 Joy runs 3- and 4-day Bahamas trips from Miami, so you get a big-ship weekend without a full week’s fare. Our short cruise guide compares other quick trips.

Who should look elsewhere: travelers who want quiet, or who dislike paying for extras. A smaller premium ship suits a calm Alaska week better.

Standout features

• Norwegian Joy Speedway: a two-level go-kart track on the top deck. It costs extra.
• Observation Lounge: a forward lounge with 180-degree views, the best indoor seat on the ship for Alaska’s scenery.
• The Waterfront: an outdoor promenade lined with restaurants and bars, a Breakaway-class idea NCL kept on the Plus ships.
• Spice H2O: an adults-only outdoor deck, plus the Vibe Beach Club, a paid-access adults-only sun deck that was expanded in the 2024 refit.
• Shows and music: Bring Back the ’90s, the magic show Elements and The Cavern Club for Beatles tribute music.
• Mandara Spa Thermal Suite: added in 2024; access is sold separately.

Cabins to pick, cabins to avoid

Norwegian Joy has inside, oceanview, balcony, Club Balcony Suite and suite cabins, plus The Haven, NCL’s gated suite complex with its own restaurant, lounge and 24-hour butler service.

Pick:

• A balcony midship for Alaska. The scenery is the point of the trip, and midship cabins move least in open water on the way to and from Seattle.
• The Haven if you want a quieter ship within the ship and can afford it; it’s the easiest way to avoid the crowds.
• An inside cabin for a 3- or 4-night Bahamas trip, where you’ll spend little time in the room.

Avoid or think twice:

• Cabins directly below the race track or the pool deck, which can be noisy in the daytime.
• Cabins near the aft or forward ends if you get seasick.
• Oceanview or balcony cabins with lifeboat-obstructed views; check the category description before booking.

Norwegian Joy deck plans

The Speedway and the pools sit on the top decks, the Observation Lounge faces forward, and The Waterfront runs along both sides of the ship on a lower deck. For a quiet night, pick a cabin on a deck with cabins above and below rather than one directly under the top-deck attractions.

Dining and activities

Two main dining rooms, the buffet and several casual cafés and grills are included. The specialty restaurants cost extra: Cagney’s Steakhouse, La Cucina (Italian), Le Bistro (French), Q Texas Smokehouse, Ocean Blue (seafood) and Teppanyaki. There’s also a Starbucks and the Sugarcane Mojito Bar.

Norwegian’s Free at Sea fare bundle can include specialty dining meals, an open bar, Starlink Wi-Fi and a shore excursion credit; Free at Sea Plus adds more for a daily fee. Where Norwegian Joy sails in 2026–2027

• From November 2026, Bahamas from Miami: Joy’s first season of 3- and 4-day Bahamas cruises, departing on Fridays and Mondays, until it moves to Alaska in spring 2027. NCL lists Great Stirrup Cay, its private island, and Nassau on the 3-day trip.
• Spring to September 2027, Alaska from Seattle: 7-day round trips from Pier 66 (Joy and Bliss between them depart every Friday, Saturday and Sunday), plus 9- and 10-day voyages from mid-May to mid-June and from late August to late September. Sister ships

Joy is one of four Breakaway Plus ships. Norwegian Bliss is the closest match: it was also built with Alaska in mind and also has a race track and Observation Lounge, and it sails from Seattle in 2027 too. Norwegian Encore is the newest of the four and joins them in Seattle, and Norwegian Escape, the first, sails 3- to 5-day Bahamas and Caribbean trips from Miami in spring and summer 2027. If your dates don’t suit Joy, Bliss and Encore are close to the same Alaska cruise.
