3 day cruises 2026: the best weekend and short cruises
A 3 day cruise is usually a 3-night sailing, often Friday to Monday, and most of them go from Florida to the Bahamas and a cruise line's private island. Carnival runs the most short sailings, including 3- to 5-night trips from Long Beach and New Orleans, while Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC and Disney run most of theirs from Florida.

- You live within driving distance of a port that runs short sailings.
- A beach day, good food and a show or two is all you need from the trip.

- You want a quiet ship. Short sailings draw celebrations, groups and a party crowd.
- You care about ports. Most 3- and 4-night itineraries have one or two stops.
- Flights would cost more than the cruise. The numbers rarely work for a weekend.

We ranked lines on how well they do a short trip: how many 3- to 5-night sailings they run, from which ports, what you get on board for the fare and how the one or two port days are spent. Each line is scored on the criteria in how we rate cruises. From-prices come from our monthly snapshot and show the date they were checked.
Weekend, 3, 4 and 5 night cruises: what you get
2-night cruises are rare. They’re mostly positioning trips when a ship moves between ports, or occasional short “sampler” sailings.
3-night cruises (a “3 day cruise” in most searches) often run Friday to Monday. From Florida that’s typically one day in Nassau or Bimini and one on a private island. From Long Beach it’s Ensenada, on Carnival.
4-night cruises often run Monday to Friday and add a sea day or a second port. Carnival’s 4-night Long Beach trip, for example, calls at Catalina Island and Ensenada. Many people find this is the minimum for the trip to feel like a holiday rather than a long check-in and check-out.
5-night cruises reach further: Cozumel and Progreso from New Orleans, Key West and the Bahamas from Florida, and in some seasons Bermuda from the Northeast. Carnival Firenze, for example, is scheduled to sail 4- and 5-day trips to Bermuda or Canada from New York from late May 2027.

Why: The widest choice of 3-, 4- and 5-night cruises, with regular short sailings from Long Beach and New Orleans as well as Florida.
Watch out: A lively, party-leaning crowd on weekends, and the cheapest fares are inside cabins with drinks and Wi-Fi extra.

Why: Short Bahamas sailings from Florida usually include Perfect Day at CocoCay, which has more to do than any other private island.
Watch out: The water park and some island extras cost more on top of the fare. Florida-only departures for most short trips.

Disney Cruise Line, Disney Wish (3- and 4-night sailings from Port Canaveral)
Why: 3- and 4-night Bahamas sailings with Disney's kids' clubs, character events and a day at Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay, Disney's private islands, which is a lower-cost way to try Disney than a week.
Watch out: Even short Disney sailings cost much more per night than other lines, and they leave from Florida.

Why: Freestyle dining with no fixed dinner time suits a short trip, and short Bahamas sailings usually stop at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's island.

Where short cruises leave from
Most short sailings leave from Florida (Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale) for the Bahamas, and from Galveston for Cozumel. If you live elsewhere, these are the home ports we cover that have short trips in at least part of the year:
- Los Angeles and Long Beach: Carnival’s 3-night sailings to Ensenada and 4-night sailings to Catalina Island and Ensenada, year-round. Carnival Radiance is scheduled to keep running them through April 2028. This is the most reliable short-cruise port outside Florida and Texas.
- New Orleans: Carnival’s 4- and 5-night western Caribbean sailings to Cozumel and Progreso, on Carnival Valor until May 2027 and Carnival Dream after that.
- New York, Baltimore and Boston: a few short sailings. Carnival Firenze adds 4- and 5-day Bermuda and Canada trips from New York from late May 2027. Carnival’s Baltimore ships sail 7 nights or longer in 2027–28. Check the port guides for other lines’ schedules.
- Seattle: occasional short Pacific coast trips, usually around the start and end of the Alaska season. Princess, for example, runs short one-way and round-trip “getaway” cruises from Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Short cruise FAQ
Is a 3 day cruise worth it?
Yes, if you can drive to the port and want a taste of cruising. You get two nights of dinners and shows, a beach day and one port. It’s not the way to see a destination: for that, take a week.
Are there really $99 3 day cruises to the Bahamas?
Very low headline fares do appear on some short Bahamas sailings, mostly for inside cabins at quiet times of year. Taxes, fees and port expenses are added on top, and so are daily gratuities on most lines, so the price you pay is well above the advertised fare. Compare the full price.
Do I need a passport for a 3 day cruise?
For a closed-loop sailing that starts and ends at the same U.S. port, U.S. citizens can usually travel with a birth certificate and government photo ID. A passport is the safer choice if you might need to fly home from a foreign port. See our guide to cruising without a passport.
What's the difference between a 4 day and a 5 day cruise?
One more night, which usually means a sea day or a second port. On a 5-night trip from New Orleans, for example, that can be the difference between one Mexican port and two.
When are short cruises cheapest?
Outside school holidays: early December, late January to early February and September are usually the quieter times. Weekday departures (a 4-night Monday sailing) can be cheaper than weekend ones.
