Virgin Voyages is the best cruise line for adults who want a lively ship with no children aboard, and Oceania is the pick for a quieter, food-focused one: both take only guests 18 and over. Most other "adult" cruise lines, such as Celebrity and Holland America, still accept children but draw passengers who skew older.

- You're a couple or a group of friends and would rather not share the pool with families.
- Food, bars and evening entertainment matter more than waterslides.
- You can travel outside school holidays, when even family lines have fewer children.

- Anyone in your group is under 18. Virgin Voyages won't take them.

How we picked
We sorted lines into two groups before ranking them. Adults-only lines don’t accept guests under 18 at all. Adult-leaning lines accept children but draw few of them, because they have no kids’ clubs, longer itineraries or a quieter style. Both are useful, but only the first gives you a guarantee.
Within each group we ranked lines on the criteria in how we rate cruises, weighted toward food, bars and evening life, and how the ship feels for adults on a typical sailing. These are editorial picks with a reason for each place, not scores.

Why: No one under 18 sails. All the restaurants, Wi-Fi and basic drinks such as coffee, juice and soda are included, there's no buffet, and the ships were designed for adults from the start.
Watch out: Lively rather than quiet, with late nights and a party feel on many sailings. The fleet is small, so itinerary choice is limited.

Adults-only vs adult-leaning: what the rules actually say
Virgin Voyages is adults-only: every guest must be 18 or older. It is the only big-ship line in our coverage with that rule. Read more in our Virgin Voyages guide.
Viking also sails without children: its booking terms say every guest must be 18 or older on the day the cruise starts, and there are no facilities for anyone younger. It isn’t one of the ten lines we rank in full, but it’s a strong choice for older adults who want a small, quiet ship and a destination focus.
Oceania became adults-only on January 7, 2026: new bookings are for guests 18 and over only. Reservations made before that date that include younger travelers are still honored, so you may see a few teenagers during the changeover. It’s the quieter, food-first alternative to Virgin. Celebrity, Holland America and Princess all accept children and run youth programs. They make this list because their passengers skew older and they offer adult-only areas, not because children are kept off. Every Celebrity ship has an adults-only Solarium, and its pool is for guests 16 and older (younger children may be allowed in with a parent during bad weather or set hours on some itineraries).
Adult-only areas on family ships
If your group includes one family with kids, or you like the big-ship choice, the mass-market lines have spaces set aside for adults:
- Royal Caribbean: the Solarium, an adults-only pool area on many ships. Check your ship’s daily planner for the age limit, which can vary by venue.
- Carnival: the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat, a free, quiet deck area for guests 21 and over, on almost every ship in the fleet (27 ships, including Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration).
- Norwegian: Vibe Beach Club on some ships, for guests 18 and over. Entry needs a paid pass or cabana for the whole cruise.
