Freedom of the Seas cruise ship: who it suits, where it sails and which cabin to book
The Freedom of the Seas cruise ship is the easy way to get big-ship Royal Caribbean features, like racing slides and an ice rink, on a short trip. It sails 4- and 5-night Bahamas and Caribbean cruises from Miami in winter, with a few 9-night trips, then spends summer 2027 in Southampton. It dates from 2006 but was amplified in 2020.
Book it if
- You want a four- or five-night trip with a Perfect Day at CocoCay stop.
- Your kids want waterslides, surfing and ice skating in one place.
- You're in the UK or Europe in summer 2027 or 2028 and want a big American-style ship from Southampton.
Skip it if
- You want the biggest and newest ship. Look at Star of the Seas or Wonder of the Seas.
- You dislike crowds. The ship carries about 3,960 guests and more when every berth is filled.
- You want a quiet, port-heavy week. Short Miami sailings are lively and sea-day heavy.

Part of the Royal Caribbean fleet. Home ports: Miami, Southampton.
Freedom of the Seas is the first of Royal Caribbean’s three Freedom-class ships. It was built at Turku, Finland, and made its maiden voyage in June 2006, when it was the world’s largest passenger ship by tonnage. It’s 1,111 feet long and measures 156,271 gross tons after cabins were added in 2015. Guest counts vary: Cruise Industry News gives 3,960, Wikipedia 3,782 at double occupancy, and CruiseMapper 4,024 to 4,829.
Who it suits
Families on a short break. Most winter sailings from Miami are four or five nights, with a FlowRider, racing slides, an ice rink and a kids’ splash zone on board. Our family cruise guide compares it with other picks.
Value hunters. Freedom has many of the activities that sell Royal Caribbean’s bigger ships. Compare fares in the price box before you choose. Our short cruise guide covers other three- to five-night options.
UK and European cruisers. In summer 2027 and 2028, Freedom sails from Southampton, with trips from two to 12 nights.
Who should look elsewhere: anyone after a quiet ship or the newest features. Wonder of the Seas and Star of the Seas are the big-ship alternatives from Florida.
What did the Freedom of the Seas amplification add?
Freedom of the Seas was amplified in a dry dock from January 12 to March 7, 2020, costing about $116 million. It added The Perfect Storm, a pair of three-story racing slides called Cyclone and Typhoon, the Splashaway Bay kids’ aqua park, The Lime and Coconut bar, Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade, and new restaurants.
Other changes from the same refit:
- Laser tag: Battle for Planet Z, in Studio B, the ice rink venue.
- Escape room: The Observatorium.
- Dining: Izumi Hibachi & Sushi and El Loco Fresh joined Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, which arrived in 2015.
- Pool deck and Solarium: more shaded seating, and the adults-only Solarium was refurbished.
- Cabins: meeting and lounge space on Decks 2, 3 and 6 became new inside and balcony cabins.
An earlier 2015 dry dock refreshed every cabin and added spa cabins on Deck 12.
Standout features
- The Perfect Storm: Cyclone and Typhoon side-by-side racing slides on Deck 13.
- FlowRider: a surf simulator, also on Deck 13.
- Ice rink: Studio B on Deck 2 is an indoor ice rink.
- Royal Promenade: the indoor street of bars, shops and cafés that runs along Deck 5.
- Sports deck: a rock-climbing wall, mini-golf and a full-size basketball court.
Freedom of the Seas cabins to pick and avoid
The best cabin on Freedom of the Seas for most guests is a midship balcony on Decks 6 to 9, which CruiseMapper’s deck plan titles show as cabin-only decks. On a four- or five-night trip, an inside cabin is a sensible way to save, since you’ll spend little time in the room.
Pick:
- A midship balcony on Decks 6 to 9 for a quiet, central base.
- A Promenade-view inside cabin if you want a window for the price of an inside. These look onto the Royal Promenade rather than the sea, and parades and late-night bar noise can carry.
- A suite if you want more space. Check what the suite fare includes before you book.
Avoid or think twice:
- Deck 12 cabins directly under the Deck 13 sports deck, slides and FlowRider, which can be noisy by day.
- Deck 11 cabins close to the pool deck.
- Low cabins on Deck 2 next to the ice rink and Deck 3 cabins near the dining room, if noise bothers you.
Dining and activities
Royal Caribbean’s ship page names Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, El Loco Fresh, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, the Windjammer buffet and the main dining room. CruiseMapper adds Chops Grille, Sorrento’s Pizzeria and Johnny Rockets. Some of these carry a charge, so check the line’s dining packages before you go.
Kids have the Adventure Ocean program, Splashaway Bay and teen hangouts. Adults have the Solarium, a casino and the Star Lounge. Our Royal Caribbean guide explains what fares include, and Norwegian vs Royal Caribbean sets it against its main rival.
