Boston has one cruise terminal, run by Massport, the same agency that runs Logan Airport. It sits at the far end of the Seaport District in South Boston.

Boston cruise port parking

• Parking: Royal Caribbean directs guests to a covered city (EDIC) garage across from the terminal, paid by the day by cash or card. Spaces can run short on busy fall weekends, when several ships are in port at once, and rates change, so check Massport’s Flynn Cruiseport page for the current daily rate before you go.
• Drop-off: if someone can drop you off, it’s the simplest option. The terminal has a curbside drop-off area for luggage.

Staying the night before

Because Logan is so close, some travelers fly in on the morning of the cruise. It’s safer to arrive the day before, especially in the fall, when flights into Boston fill up. Seaport and downtown hotels keep the embarkation-day ride short, but they’re expensive in peak foliage weeks, so book early.

Getting there

• From Logan: a taxi or rideshare is short and cheap compared with most airport-to-port rides. By transit, the SL1 Silver Line runs to Silver Line Way, where you change to the SL2 toward Design Center and get off on Northern Avenue or Drydock Avenue, then walk the last stretch to Black Falcon Avenue.
• From South Station: Amtrak and commuter trains arrive at South Station, a short taxi ride from the terminal.
• By car: the terminal is reached through the Seaport. Expect slow traffic at weekday rush hours and on game days.

Best cruises from Boston by season

• Late spring to early fall: Bermuda. A cruise from Boston to Bermuda usually takes about a week, with sea days each way and the rest of the trip docked in Bermuda. • Summer: Canada and New England round trips. Seven nights to ports such as Portland, Bar Harbor, Saint John and Halifax. Warmer and less crowded than the fall.
• September and October: fall foliage. The most popular time to cruise from Boston, and the most expensive. Some trips run one way to Quebec City or Montreal, which lets you see the St. Lawrence River.
• Nova Scotia cruises: most Canada trips call at Halifax, and some add Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Bermuda or Canada from Boston?

Pick Bermuda if you want beaches, warm water and a hotel-style stay: the ship docks for several days and you explore the island at your own pace. Pick Canada and New England if you want a different town every day, seafood, lighthouses and fall colors. Canada trips have fewer sea days, so they feel busier. For a first cruise with children in summer, Bermuda is usually the easier sell. For a couple’s trip in the fall, Canada and New England is the one we’d pick.

1. Bermuda from Boston or New York? The trips are similar. Boston can mean a slightly longer sail, so check how many days you’re docked in Bermuda before comparing prices. Our cruises from New York guide covers the year-round alternative.

2. Book fall foliage early. Late September and early October sailings are the most in demand, so the best cabins and fares go first. Book as early as you can, and pack for cool, wet weather.

3. One-way Canada trips are the best value per day. Sailings between Boston and Quebec City or Montreal spend more time in port and on the St. Lawrence. You’ll need a one-way flight home and a passport book, because the CBP closed-loop exception only covers cruises that start and end at the same U.S. port and a passport card isn’t valid for flights. The itinerary is richer.
