Italy cruise 2026–2027: which route, which port, which line
The best Italy cruise for most Americans is a 7-night western Mediterranean sailing that starts or ends in Rome (Civitavecchia) in May, June, September or October, with calls at Naples and Livorno or Genoa. If you want Venice and the Adriatic, book a sailing from Ravenna or Trieste, because big ships no longer dock in Venice itself. No cruise covers only Italy: every route here adds Spain, France, Croatia or Greece.
Book it if
- It's your first trip to Italy and you want a sample of Rome, Florence and Naples.
- You can travel in May, June, September or October.
- You'd add two or three hotel nights in Rome or Venice before or after the cruise.
Skip it if
- You want to see Rome or Florence properly. One port day is not enough for either.
- You expect to sail from Venice past St Mark's Square. Large ships have been barred from that route since August 2021.
- You won't fly. No regular cruise sails from the U.S. to Italy and back.
Italy is on nearly every Mediterranean itinerary, and it is where many of them start. This page covers the routes and ports inside Italy. For the whole sea, from Lisbon to Istanbul, see our Mediterranean cruise guide, and for the islands to the east, our Greece cruise guide.
Best time for an Italy cruise
Italy’s coasts have a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with most of the rain in winter and spring.
- April and early May: the season opens. Mild days, lower fares and some rain. See our April 2027 and May 2027 guides.
- Late May and June: warm, dry and long days, before the school holidays. Our first pick. See June 2027.
- July and August: the hottest and busiest weeks. Rome, Florence and Pompeii involve hours on foot in the sun, so book early tours. A total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 can be seen from parts of the western Mediterranean, and several lines have sailings timed for it.
- September and October: our other pick. The sea is still warm, the crowds thin once schools go back, and fares usually drop. See September 2027 and October 2027.
- November to March: the wet season. MSC keeps ships here through the winter, including short sailings from Bari.
The three ways to cruise Italy
The west coast, from Rome. The standard Italy cruise. Ships sail from Rome (Civitavecchia) or call there on a loop from Barcelona, with stops at Naples, Livorno for Florence and Pisa, and Genoa. It usually comes with Marseille or the French Riviera and a Spanish port. Seven nights is normal.
The Adriatic, from Ravenna or Trieste. The Venice side. These sailings head down the coast to Croatia, Montenegro and Greece, so Italy is where you board more than where you cruise. Routes run 7 to 11 nights.
Sicily and the south. Messina, Palermo and Catania appear on western loops and on some eastern routes. MSC also has sailings from Bari, on the Adriatic coast.
If you want more than one, look at the 9- to 11-night routes from Rome, Ravenna or Trieste on Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America.

Italian cruise lines
Two lines have Italian roots. Costa Cruises is based in Genoa and has been owned by Carnival Corporation since 2000. It caters mainly to the European market, so expect a European crowd on board. MSC Cruises belongs to the Geneva-based MSC Group. It sails from Florida as well as Italy, and it is the one in our price data.
Carnival also runs two ships built for Costa, Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze, with Italian styling. They sail from U.S. ports, not in Italy.
Typical length and price
- 7 nights: the standard, usually a round trip from Rome or a loop you join in Rome, Genoa or Naples.
- 9 to 11 nights: common on Celebrity, Holland America, Princess and Virgin Voyages, and on routes that link Italy with Croatia and Greece.
- 2 to 4 nights: MSC sells short hops between its ports. The ones in our price data sail in winter and spring.
The cruise fare is often not the biggest cost. Flights, a hotel night before boarding and tours in Rome and Florence can add as much again. MSC and Norwegian usually have the lowest fares, Royal Caribbean and Princess sit in the middle, Celebrity and Holland America a step above, and Disney and Oceania well above that.
Italy cruise deals are easiest to find on the first and last sailings of the season, in April and from late October, and in winter. July and August rarely get cheaper close to departure. Our last-minute cruise guide explains when waiting works.
Departure ports
Cruises from Rome
Rome’s cruise port is Civitavecchia, about 50 miles up the coast. Nonstop trains to Roma Termini take about 45 minutes and commuter trains an hour and a quarter or more, with at least two departures an hour. A shuttle bus links the piers to the port gate, and the station is a short ride or walk from there.
In 2027, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Princess, Holland America, Disney and Carnival all start sailings here, and MSC lets you join its loop. A 7-day Mediterranean cruise from Rome typically calls at ports in Italy, France and Spain. The MSC loop adds Messina in Sicily and Valletta in Malta. Spend at least one night in Rome first.
Cruises from Venice
Since August 1, 2021, ships over 25,000 tonnes, or longer than 180 meters, have been barred from St Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. That covers the big ships on this page. Most of these lines now start their Adriatic sailings in Ravenna or Trieste, and both are a train or coach transfer from Venice, not a water taxi.
So read the fine print on any Venice cruise. A listing that says Venice may mean the industrial port of Marghera on the mainland, Ravenna or Trieste. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian use Ravenna. Princess and Holland America use Trieste.
Naples, Genoa and Bari
Princess has Sun Princess sailings from Naples in its 2028 program. Genoa is a boarding point on MSC’s western loop. MSC also has winter sailings from Bari in our price data.
Cruise to Italy from the USA
Almost everyone flies. There are no round trips from the U.S. to Italy. The alternative is a one-way crossing in spring, when ships move to Europe for the summer. In 2027, Mariner of the Seas crosses from New Orleans to Spain in late April, and Carnival Sunshine crosses from Norfolk in May on its way to Barcelona. Both then sail routes that reach Rome. We cover crossings in repositioning and transatlantic cruises.

Ports of call
- Rome (Civitavecchia): a long day by train or tour. Pick the Vatican or the ancient city, not both.
- Naples: the port for Pompeii and Capri. Pompeii is the easiest big excursion from the pier.
- Amalfi Coast (Salerno): an Amalfi Coast cruise call usually means Salerno, where ships dock at Molo Manfredi, under a mile from the old town. Fast ferries from the same pier reach Amalfi in about 35 minutes and also run to Positano and Capri.
- Livorno: the port for Florence and Pisa. Neither is at the port, so this is a coach or train day.
- Genoa: a working port city on MSC’s loop, and on Carnival’s 2027 routes.
- Sicily (Messina, Palermo, Catania): a Sicily cruise call is one day in one of the three. Messina is on MSC’s western loop.
- Ravenna and Trieste: where Adriatic cruises start and end. Each is a transfer from Venice.
Italy cruise FAQ
What is the best month for an Italy cruise?
Late May, June, September and October. It’s warm and mostly dry, and the cities are less crowded than in July and August. April and late October are cheaper, with more chance of rain.
Can cruise ships still dock in Venice?
Large ones can’t use the historic center. Since August 2021, ships over 25,000 tonnes have been barred from St Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Venice cruises on big ships now start in Ravenna, Trieste or the mainland port of Marghera, so check the port named on your booking.
Which cruise lines sail from Rome?
In 2027, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Princess, Holland America, Disney and Carnival all start sailings in Rome (Civitavecchia). MSC calls there on its seven-night western loop and lets you board, and Oceania has sailings from Rome too.
Is there a cruise around Italy only?
Not on the big lines. Cruises around Italy always add other countries: Spain and France on the west coast, Croatia and Greece from the Adriatic. For the most time in Italy, look at 9- to 11-night routes from Rome, Ravenna or Trieste, and add hotel nights at each end.
How do you get from the cruise port to Rome?
By train from Civitavecchia. Nonstop trains reach Roma Termini in about 45 minutes and commuter trains take an hour and a quarter or more. There are at least two an hour.
Can you cruise to Italy from the USA?
Only one way. In spring a few ships cross the Atlantic to spend the summer in the Mediterranean, and they cross back in the fall. Most people fly to Rome, Barcelona or Venice and board there.
