The Norfolk cruise port

Norfolk has one cruise terminal, the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, right on the downtown waterfront next to the Nauticus maritime museum and the battleship Wisconsin. The city runs it. It’s small and easy: one ship at a time, and you can walk to downtown hotels and restaurants.

Norfolk cruise port parking

• Cedar Grove lot: the city’s cruise parking is at the Cedar Grove lot on Monticello Avenue, a short way from the terminal. VisitNorfolk lists $15 a day for cars and vans of up to 15 seats (checked September 2026), paid on arrival in cash or by most major credit cards, or prepaid online. You can’t reserve a space, but the city says there’s ample room. You check your bags at the lot, and a free shuttle takes you to the terminal. The lot opens at 9:30 a.m. on sailing days and the last shuttle leaves at 2:30 p.m., so don’t plan to arrive after that.
• Drop-off: taxis, rideshares and friends can drop you on Waterside Drive right outside the terminal, where porters take your bags.
• Park-and-cruise hotels: some downtown hotels sell a night’s stay with parking for the length of the cruise. From many of them you can walk to the ship.

Getting there

• By car: the terminal is reached by I-64 and I-264, so it’s an easy drive from Richmond, Virginia Beach and northeastern North Carolina. From the D.C. area it’s about 195 miles, which takes around four hours, more on summer Fridays through the Hampton Roads tunnels.
• By air: Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is about 11 miles from the terminal. A taxi or rideshare is the simplest way over.
• By train or light rail: Amtrak’s Norfolk station is at Harbor Park, on the east side of downtown, and the city lists Amtrak and the Tide light rail among the ways to reach the terminal. With luggage, a short taxi or rideshare from the station is easiest.

Staying the night before

If you’re coming from farther than Richmond, stay downtown the night before. Several hotels are within walking distance of the terminal, and you avoid tunnel traffic on the morning you sail. If you arrive early on the last day, Nauticus next door stores bags for a fee.

Which cruise lines sail from Norfolk, VA?

Carnival is the only line with home-port sailings from Norfolk in 2026–2027. Carnival Sunshine has sailed from Norfolk year round since February 2025 and stays until mid-May 2027, when it leaves on a 15-day transatlantic cruise to Dover, England, for a season in Europe. Carnival Freedom takes over from May 2027 and runs the rest of the year. Royal Caribbean has no ships based in Norfolk.

Norwegian Pearl also calls at Norfolk on its 2027 Bermuda cruises from Philadelphia, from spring to late summer. That’s a stop, not a start: you board in Philadelphia. Other ships, including Holland America’s Zuiderdam, Viking Octantis and Seabourn Ovation, visit on longer voyages without starting cruises here.

• Year round: the Bahamas. About a week with Carnival. Many Norfolk sailings from September 2026 to April 2027 call at Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key, Carnival’s two Bahamas destinations. The simplest pick for a first cruise.
• Spring to fall: Bermuda. Carnival trips to King’s Wharf in the Royal Naval Dockyard. Because Norfolk is near open water, less of the week goes on getting out to sea than from Baltimore. Our Bermuda cruise guide compares the other ports.
• Winter: the eastern Caribbean. 8-day Carnival trips that reach ports such as Grand Turk. More sea days, but it swaps a Virginia winter for the Caribbean. From 2027, Carnival Freedom adds southern Caribbean trips to Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire and Grenada.
• Late summer and fall: Canada. 8-day Carnival trips north, a change from the warm-weather routes.

1. Norfolk is the short way out. Unlike Baltimore, where ships spend hours sailing down the Chesapeake Bay, Norfolk sits near the mouth of the bay. You’re at sea much sooner, which is why a week from here gets you further south than a week from Baltimore.
