Grand Turk cruise port: the cruise center, the beaches and what to do

Grand Turk cruise port is the Grand Turk Cruise Center, a beach-and-pool complex on the island's west coast, south of Cockburn Town, where ships dock a short walk from the sand. You can spend the whole day there, but the better beach (Governor's) and the best snorkeling (Gibbs Cay) are a short ride away.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center

Grand Turk is the capital island of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British territory south of the Bahamas. It is small: 6.9 square miles. Cruise ships use one port, the Grand Turk Cruise Center, which Carnival Corporation opened in 2006. Its brands have brought more than 14 million guests to the island since then, and Carnival describes it as one of its most popular Caribbean ports.

The cruise center is built for a beach day. Ships tie up at a pier about 390 feet from the complex, so there are no tenders and no long walks.

What’s at the cruise center

  • The pool: a very large free pool beside Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, which the port calls the largest in the Caribbean. Margaritaville opens only when a ship is in.
  • Cabanas: private poolside cabanas with air conditioning and a waiter, usually booked through your cruise line. Visit Turks and Caicos lists 5-hour rentals from $190 (2026 price, checked October 2026). They sell out early on busy days.
  • Beach rentals: shades, floats and snorkel gear from the beach hut. Just off the beach there are reef balls and 18th-century cannons and anchors to snorkel over.
  • South Beach: the quieter end, with the Beached Whale Bar & Grill and beachside massages.
  • FlowRider: a surf simulator next to Margaritaville, booked as a shore excursion.
  • Shops: about 45,000 square feet of shopping, including a large duty-free store, a craft market, a Starbucks and an ice cream shop.

Things to do in Grand Turk from the cruise port

The island is small enough that most of these are a short drive from the pier. If you want more than the pool, plan one main thing and leave time to get back.

  • Gibbs Cay stingraysHalf day, by boatA small island off the east coast with a beach and friendly southern stingrays, plus a reef stop. The best snorkeling you can reach on a port day. It gets busy on ship days and fills most of your time ashore.
  • Governor's Beach2 to 4 hoursVisit Turks and Caicos calls it the island's best beach. It is quieter than the cruise center beach, but the snorkeling there is poor.
  • Snorkeling at Boaby Rock Point2 hoursAbout half a mile south of the cruise center, along the beach. Much better snorkeling than the cruise center beach.
  • Cockburn Town2 to 3 hoursThe capital since 1766. The Turks and Caicos National Museum on Front Street shows the Molasses Reef Wreck.
  • Grand Turk Lighthouse1 to 2 hoursGuiding ships past the island's North Reef since 1852. Combine it with Cockburn Town.
  • Humpback whalesWinter onlyHumpbacks migrate past Grand Turk each winter, and local operators run whale-watching and swim trips.

Grand Turk cruise port beach: which beach to pick

  • Cruise Center Beach: the easiest. It is right in front of the complex, so it gets crowded, but walking north along the sand gets you more space.
  • Governor’s Beach: less than a mile north of the cruise center. You can’t walk there along the beach, because the port blocks part of the shore. The road walk is about a mile each way with no sidewalks, so take a taxi, rent a cart or buy the cruise center’s Governor’s Beach package (bus, water and snorkel gear).
  • Boaby Rock Point: about half a mile south. Walk along the beach. Pick it if you came to snorkel from shore.
  • Pillory Beach: sheltered and calm, with small reefs.

Getting around Grand Turk

  • Taxis: wait at the cruise center. Agree the fare before you get in, and carry U.S. dollars in small notes.
  • Golf carts and cars: the port lists local car and golf cart rental companies. The island is easy to find your way around, and Visit Turks and Caicos says renting costs about the same as the beach package while giving you more freedom.
  • Walking: fine around the cruise center and south along the beach. Town and Governor’s Beach are along a road without sidewalks.

Grand Turk cruise port schedule

The cruise center publishes its port schedule on its own website, and your line’s app gives your arrival and all-aboard times. On days with two or more big ships in, the pool, cabanas and the Gibbs Cay boats fill first, so book those before you sail.

Is Grand Turk safe for cruise passengers?

The U.S. State Department rates the Turks and Caicos Islands at Level 2, “exercise increased caution” (advisory dated July 2026). On a port day, take the usual care: keep valuables on the ship and stay in the areas visitors use.
