Best time for a Bermuda cruise

Bermuda sits in the Atlantic, level with the Carolinas, not in the tropics. It’s warm from late spring to early fall and mild the rest of the year. Monthly averages from Bermuda’s tourism authority:

• April and May: air around 72 to 76°F, sea 68 to 72°F. Pleasant for walking and sightseeing, but cool for swimming. Fares are often lower.
• June: air about 81°F, sea about 78°F. Beach season starts and school is still in session for much of the month.
• July and August: air about 85°F, sea 82 to 84°F. The warmest water and the busiest ships, with the most families aboard.
• September: still about 85°F with 83°F water, and fewer children aboard. It’s also the peak of hurricane season.
• October: air about 80°F, sea about 78°F. The last good beach month, with more chance of rough seas on the way.

Our pick: June or early September. You get warm water with smaller crowds than midsummer.

Hurricanes: Bermuda is inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. Ships steer clear of storms, and a Bermuda trip can become a trip to somewhere else, such as the Bahamas or Canada, or gain extra sea days. If Bermuda itself is the point, sail in June or July.

Norwegian has the most Bermuda sailings in 2027, from three ports. Most other big lines run a seasonal program from one Northeast port.

Typical length and price

• 5 nights: one sea day each way and about two days docked with an overnight, as on Royal Caribbean’s Bermuda getaways from Cape Liberty. Good for a first cruise.
• 7 nights: the classic Bermuda cruise, with two or three days docked. The best balance.
• 9 nights: Royal Caribbean’s longer trips from Cape Liberty and Baltimore pair Bermuda with a second destination, such as the Eastern Caribbean or Bimini.

Bermuda cruises cost more per night than a Caribbean week from Florida, mostly because the Northeast has fewer ships competing, but you save the flight. Summer weeks are the most expensive; April, May and October are cheaper. Carnival and Royal Caribbean from Baltimore are usually the lower-priced options; Celebrity sits at the top.

• New York: the most choice, from Manhattan (Norwegian) and Cape Liberty in Bayonne (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity). New York to Bermuda is the classic route.
• Boston: Norwegian Breakaway’s 7-day trips, which also call at Halifax, so check how many days you actually get in Bermuda.
• Baltimore: Carnival Pride and Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas. Easy for Washington, D.C., and the Mid-Atlantic.
• Philadelphia and Norfolk: Norwegian Pearl sails 7-day Bermuda trips from Philadelphia with a call in Norfolk, Virginia, from April to early September 2027.

Bermuda trips from Florida exist but are rare, usually as part of a repositioning voyage.

Ports of call and what to do in Bermuda

On most cruises Bermuda is a single port, but the island is 21 miles long, and you can cover a lot of it in two or three days.

• Royal Naval Dockyard (King’s Wharf): where you dock. The National Museum of Bermuda sits in the old fortress, with shops and restaurants around it.
• Hamilton: the capital, about 15 to 20 minutes by the Blue Route fast ferry, against an hour by bus. Shops, Front Street and the harbor.
• St. George’s: the old colonial town at the east end, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Orange Route ferry takes about 45 minutes from Dockyard and runs seasonally from May to October.
• South Shore beaches: Horseshoe Bay and the coves nearby, reached by bus or taxi from Dockyard.

Things to do in Bermuda on a cruise: snorkel the reefs and shipwrecks, visit Crystal Caves, take the ferry to St. George’s, or spend a full day at Horseshoe Bay. Visitors can’t rent ordinary cars; you can rent a small two-seat electric minicar, or use the ferries, buses and taxis.

How long is a cruise from New York to Bermuda?

Usually 5 to 7 nights. The sailing takes one to two days each way, so a 7-night trip usually gives you two or three days docked at King’s Wharf, and a 5-night trip about two.

Is Boston or New York better for a Bermuda cruise?

New York has more lines and more dates. Boston is simpler if you live in New England, but Norwegian’s 2027 Boston trips also call at Halifax, which trims your time in Bermuda. Compare days docked before you compare fares.

What's the best time to cruise to Bermuda?

June to September for warm water, with June and early September the best balance of weather and crowds. April, May and October are cheaper and fine for sightseeing, but cooler for swimming.

Do I need a passport for a Bermuda cruise?

On a round trip that starts and ends at the same U.S. port, U.S. citizens can sail with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID under CBP’s closed-loop rule. A passport is still the safer choice in case you have to fly home from Bermuda. See our guide to cruises without a passport.

Which Bermuda cruise excursions are worth it?

Snorkeling trips to the reefs and wrecks, a beach day at Horseshoe Bay and a visit to St. George’s are the classics. Because you’re docked for more than a day, you can do much of it on your own with the ferry and bus rather than booking every excursion through the ship.
