Holidays and school breaks

Schools let out through June, district by district, so the share of families aboard rises as the month goes on. The first half of the month is the calmer half on most routes. Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19, 2027, and Father’s Day on Sunday, June 20. Alaska cruise in June: weather and what to pack

June is our pick for Alaska. Travel Alaska, the state tourism office, gives Juneau an average range of 48 to 61°F in June, and the summer solstice on June 21 brings almost 24 hours of daylight in Fairbanks. On an Inside Passage sailing that means light until late in the evening. Travel Alaska also names May and June as the best months for whale watching. July is warmer, but fares are highest then and more families are aboard.

What to wear on an Alaskan cruise in June:

• a waterproof jacket, because Southeast Alaska is rainforest and showers come in any month
• a fleece or other warm mid-layer
• a hat and gloves for the glacier day
• shoes that can get wet
• binoculars, plus sunglasses and sunscreen for the long days

Travel Alaska’s advice is layers and rain gear, and to plan for anything from the 40s to the 70s on and off the ship. Leave the heavy winter coat at home.

Europe in June: warm Mediterranean, light nights in the north

Late May and June are the best all-round window in Europe: the Mediterranean is warm, and the school holidays haven’t fully started. June is also our pick for a first Greek cruise, with long days and a warm sea before the peak crowds and the worst of the summer heat.

In Northern Europe, June has the longest days of the year. The midnight sun is a northern Norway event, and June is the one month when it reaches every place on Visit Norway’s list. The dates run from May 14 to July 29 at the North Cape, May 20 to July 22 in Tromsø, May 28 to July 14 in the Lofoten Islands and June 12 to July 1 at the Arctic Circle itself. A fjords-only itinerary in southern Norway stays below the Arctic Circle and gets long, light evenings but no midnight sun. In Iceland it barely gets dark in June.

Bermuda and the Caribbean

Bermuda starts its beach season in June. Go To Bermuda gives an average of about 81°F in the air and 78°F in the water. Ships sail there from New York, Cape Liberty, Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore, and Carnival Pride starts its 2027 Bermuda season from Baltimore this month.

The Caribbean is quiet early in the month and fills with families later. The Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, but June is an early, low-risk part of it. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center says the first named Atlantic storm typically forms in mid to late June and the first hurricane in early to mid-August. On the Pacific side the season has been open since May 15, and most ships have left the Mexican Riviera for Alaska.
