Cruises in July 2027: where to go and what to expect

July is peak season almost everywhere: Alaska is at its warmest, northern Norway has the midnight sun for most of the month, and the Mediterranean is hot, busy and at its most expensive. If you have to travel in July, the north is where peak season pays off most.

Book it if

  • School holidays decide your dates.
  • You want Alaska at its warmest.
  • The midnight sun in Norway or Iceland is the point of the trip.

Skip it if

  • Heat waves in Greece and southern Europe put you off.
  • You want the lowest fare.
  • Crowded ports spoil it for you.

4th of July cruises and school holidays

Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4, 2027, so the federal holiday is observed on Monday, July 5 and many people get a long weekend. Sailings that include the holiday are among the busiest of the summer, and July as a whole is peak school-holiday season on almost every route. Our family cruise guide covers which lines handle a full ship of children best.

If you’re searching for a 4th of July cruise from New York, check which kind you mean. The fireworks cruises in New York Harbor are evening sightseeing boats, which we don’t cover. For a holiday at sea, look for a departure in the days before July 4 from New York or New Jersey. The summer 2027 ships there include Norwegian Luna on Bermuda trips, Carnival Firenze from Manhattan, and Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas from Cape Liberty. Check each sailing’s dates before you book, because not every ship has a departure that covers the holiday.

Carnival is the usual low-fare choice for a July cruise. Outside Florida and Texas, its summer 2027 home ports include New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Long Beach and Seattle; see our Carnival guide.

Alaska cruise in July: weather and what to pack

July is the warmest month in Alaska and the peak of the season. Travel Alaska, the state tourism office, gives Juneau an average range of 52 to 63°F and describes July as a month with plenty of sunshine and clear skies. That is warm for Alaska and still a jacket trip. It’s also when fares are highest and ports are busiest.

What to wear on an Alaskan cruise in July:

  • a waterproof jacket, because Southeast Alaska is rainforest and showers come in any month
  • a fleece or other warm mid-layer
  • a hat and gloves for the glacier day
  • shoes that can get wet
  • binoculars, plus sunglasses for long bright days

Pack layers you can take off in port. Our best cruise lines for Alaska ranking covers which line to pick. If you can move your dates, June has fewer families and August usually costs a little less.

Northern Europe: the midnight sun runs out in July

Northern Europe is our pick for July: cool, light late into the evening, and far from the Mediterranean heat. If the midnight sun is the reason for the trip, pick an early-July sailing that goes well north. Visit Norway gives its last dates as July 14 in the Lofoten Islands, July 22 in Tromsø and July 29 at the North Cape. A fjords-only itinerary in southern Norway stays below the Arctic Circle and gets long evenings but no midnight sun.

The Mediterranean, Bermuda and the Caribbean

The Mediterranean is at its hottest, busiest and most expensive. In Greece, heat waves above 100°F occur in summer, and the meltemi wind, most frequent in July and August, can make tender ports choppy. Our Europe cruise guide and Greece guide explain why June and September are easier.

The total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 belongs on a July list, because the sailings built around it leave in July. Princess has two 14-day trips departing in late July, Sky Princess from Southampton and Enchanted Princess from Civitavecchia (Rome).

Bermuda is in full beach season, with Go To Bermuda giving about 85°F in the air and 82°F in the water. The Caribbean is busy with families. The Atlantic hurricane season has been open since June 1, but NOAA puts most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so July carries less storm risk than the months that follow.
