Mediterranean cruise 2027: which route, which line, which month

The best Mediterranean cruise for 2027 for most Americans is a 7-night western Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona or Rome (Civitavecchia) in May, June, September or October. Pick the eastern Mediterranean from Athens or Ravenna if you want Greece, Croatia and Turkey more than Spain, France and Italy. Nearly every big line we cover has ships here in 2027, and Carnival joins them with Carnival Sunshine.

Book it if

  • You want Barcelona, Rome, the French Riviera or the Greek islands without packing and unpacking.
  • You can go in May, June, September or October, when it's warm and the ports are calmer.
  • You want to see the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 from a ship. Several lines have a sailing timed for it.

Skip it if

  • You dislike heat and crowds and can only go in July or August.
  • You want several days in one city. A port call gives you about a day.
  • You won't fly. A crossing from the U.S. takes about two weeks one way.

The Mediterranean is the southern half of the European cruise map. This page covers the whole sea, from Lisbon and Barcelona to Istanbul. For the Greek islands on their own, see our Greece cruise guide. For the fjords, the Baltic and Iceland, see Northern Europe, and for both halves side by side, our European cruises guide.

Best time for a Mediterranean cruise

The Mediterranean has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Nearly all the rain falls in winter and spring, and some coasts go months in summer without any.

  • April and early May: the season opens. Mild days and lower fares, with a chance of rain. Our April 2027 and May 2027 guides compare it with other regions.
  • Late May and June: warm, dry and long days, before the school holidays fill the ships. Our first pick. See the June 2027 cruise guide.
  • July and August: the hottest and busiest weeks, and usually the most expensive. Families have little choice, so book port tours for the early morning. A total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 can be seen from parts of the western Mediterranean, and Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival and Virgin Voyages all have sailings timed for it.
  • September and October: our other pick. The sea is still warm from the summer, crowds thin once European schools go back, and fares usually drop. See September 2027 and October 2027.
  • November to March: the wet season. A smaller set of ships stays, mostly in the western Mediterranean. The plan MSC published in July 2026 for winter 2027–28 has five ships there and one in the east.

Western or eastern Mediterranean

Most Mediterranean cruises are one or the other.

A western Mediterranean cruise runs between Spain, France and Italy, usually from Barcelona or Rome (Civitavecchia). Typical stops are Marseille or the French Riviera, Genoa, Florence and Pisa by way of Livorno, Naples and Palma de Mallorca. Some routes add Malta, Tunisia or Morocco. It’s the easier first trip: more flights, more ships and more seven-night round trips.

An eastern Mediterranean cruise covers the Adriatic and the Aegean: Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. Ships start in Athens (Piraeus), in Ravenna or Trieste for Venice, or in Rome. Routes are often longer, at 9 to 11 nights, and more of the stops are small islands and walled towns.

One-way sailings between Barcelona and Athens, or Barcelona and Rome, give you some of both.

Typical length and price

  • 7 nights: the standard. A 7-day Mediterranean cruise is usually a round trip from Barcelona, Rome or Athens with five or six ports. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity and MSC all build their programs around it.
  • 9 to 11 nights: common in the east and on Celebrity, Norwegian Viva, Holland America and Virgin Voyages. Better if you want Croatia and Greece on one trip.
  • 14 nights and more: Princess lists voyages of up to 32 nights on Sun Princess, and Holland America says its cruises can be combined for up to 21 days without repeating a port.
  • 2 to 5 nights: MSC sells short hops between its ports. The ones in our price data sail between November and April.

The cruise fare is often not the biggest cost. Flights, a hotel night before boarding and shore excursions can add as much again. MSC and Norwegian usually have the lowest fares, Royal Caribbean and Princess sit in the middle, Celebrity and Holland America a step above, and Oceania and the small-ship lines well above that.

Mediterranean cruise deals are easiest to find on the first and last sailings of the season, in April and from late October, and on winter sailings. July and August rarely get cheaper close to departure. Our last-minute cruise guide explains when waiting works.

Departure ports

  • Barcelona: the port handled 3.65 million cruise passengers in 2024, and cruises from Barcelona run on most big lines. The terminals are on the Adossat wharf. The city and the port agreed in 2025 to cut them from seven to five by 2030, so expect building work.
  • Rome (Civitavecchia): the port is a train or coach ride from Rome, so plan the transfer.
  • Athens (Piraeus): the main start for the Greek islands and Turkey.
  • Ravenna and Trieste: the ports lines use for Venice and the Adriatic.
  • Lisbon: the start for Portugal, Morocco and Spain routes. Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas sails nine-night cruises from here in 2027.
  • Istanbul: Norwegian Viva starts some sailings here. Princess moved several 2027 departures from Istanbul to Athens and Trieste in May 2026, so check an older booking.

Fly in at least a day early. A missed connection from the U.S. is the usual way people miss a European cruise.

Cruise to Spain from the USA

You can sail to the Mediterranean instead of flying one way. In spring, ships that wintered in the U.S. cross to Europe, and they come back in October and November.

  • From New Orleans: Mariner of the Seas crosses to Europe in late April 2027. See our New Orleans cruise port guide.
  • From Norfolk: Carnival Sunshine leaves on May 15, 2027 on a 15-day crossing to Dover, then sails on to Barcelona. See our Norfolk cruise port guide.
  • Back to the U.S.: both ships cross west again in October 2027, Carnival Sunshine from Barcelona.

A crossing means a week or more of sea days in a row. We cover them in repositioning and transatlantic cruises.

Mediterranean cruises by country

Spain cruises. Barcelona is the start or end of most of them. Palma de Mallorca, Málaga, Valencia and Cartagena are the usual calls. Cruises to Spain and Portugal together run from Barcelona or Lisbon and often add Morocco.

Portugal cruises. Lisbon and Porto (Leixões) are on the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean, but they appear on western routes from Barcelona. Norwegian Dawn sails one-way between Barcelona and Lisbon from May to October 2027, and Royal Caribbean added Porto as a new port for 2027.

France cruises. Marseille is the usual big-ship call, several routes are sold as Italy and French Riviera cruises, and Ajaccio in Corsica is on Carnival, Holland America and Virgin Voyages routes in 2027.

Italy cruises. Rome, Naples, Genoa, Livorno, and Sicily’s Messina, Catania and Palermo. Italy is on nearly every western route and many eastern ones.

Croatia cruises. Dubrovnik and Split are the main calls, usually with Kotor in Montenegro. A Croatia cruise on a big ship is an eastern Mediterranean route from Ravenna, Trieste, Rome or Athens. Norwegian Prima calls at Dubrovnik, Split and Kotor for the first time in 2027, and Holland America’s Oosterdam visits Kotor and Dubrovnik on its 10- and 11-day cruises. Dubrovnik announced a cap of two cruise ships and 5,000 passengers a day from 2019.

Turkey cruises. Kusadasi, the port for Ephesus, and Istanbul are the main stops, mostly on routes from Athens. Carnival Sunshine calls at Izmir in 2027.

Mediterranean cruise FAQ

What is the best time for a Mediterranean cruise?

Late May, June, September and October. It’s warm and mostly dry, and the ports are calmer than in July and August. April and late October are cheaper, with more chance of rain.

Which is better, a western or eastern Mediterranean cruise?

Western for a first trip: Barcelona, the French Riviera, Rome and Naples, on seven-night round trips with easy flights. Eastern if you’ve seen those cities or want islands and old walled towns in Croatia, Greece and Turkey.

Can I already book a Mediterranean cruise for 2028?

Yes. Several lines have 2028 sailings on sale. MSC has published its winter 2027–28 plan, and it has already moved some sailings between ships, so check the ship named on a booking.

Which cruise lines sail from Barcelona?

In 2027, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, Princess, Holland America, Virgin Voyages, Disney and Carnival all start sailings in Barcelona, and MSC calls there on its seven-night western routes.

Is there a cruise to Spain from the USA?

Yes, in spring. Ships moving to Europe for the summer cross from U.S. ports, such as Mariner of the Seas from New Orleans in late April 2027. Carnival Sunshine crosses from Norfolk to Dover in May 2027 and then sails to Barcelona. Most people fly home.

How long is a Mediterranean cruise?

Seven nights is the standard. Eastern routes that include Croatia, Greece and Turkey are often 9 to 11 nights, and Princess and Holland America sell combined trips of two weeks or more.
