We ranked the ten cruise lines most US travelers choose between: the big mainstream lines, the premium lines and Virgin Voyages. Luxury lines are covered separately below, because they cost several times more and answer a different question. Each line is judged on the criteria in how we rate cruises: food, service, ships, itineraries and value for the fare you actually pay once extras are added.
The order reflects how well a line suits a typical adult traveler with no fixed trip type. It is an editorial opinion with a reason for every place, not a score. A line lower on this list can still be the right pick for you, and the category winners below say when. Once you have a line, our best cruise ships ranking names the ship to look at first.

Best cruise line overall
Celebrity Cruises, Celebrity Beyond (Edge class)
Why: Modern ships, a better main dining room than the mass-market lines and a calmer feel, at fares far below luxury lines. It does most things well.
Watch out: All Included fares bundle drinks and Wi-Fi, which makes the headline price look high next to cruise-only fares. Crew tips are still extra. Compare like with like.
Best food at sea
Oceania Cruises, Vista (Allura class)
Why: Specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi and tips are included in every fare, and food is the reason people book it. Port-heavy itineraries suit travelers who like to explore.
Watch out: Modest evening entertainment, and adults only (18+) for new bookings, so no family trips. Longer sailings push the total cost up.
Best for adults
Virgin Voyages, Scarlet Lady
Why: The only big-ship line on this list that is adults-only (Oceania is too, but its ships are far smaller). All its restaurants and Wi-Fi are included, and there's no buffet.
Watch out: A small fleet, and many sailings are short Caribbean trips from Miami. The party atmosphere is not for everyone.
Best for activities and teens
Royal Caribbean, Icon of the Seas
Why: The biggest ships at sea, with waterparks, surf simulators, climbing walls and shows, plus a private island stop on many Bahamas sailings.
Watch out: Very busy ships, and extras add up fast: drinks, specialty dining and some activities cost more.
Best for young children
Disney Cruise Line, Disney Wish
Why: The strongest kids' clubs at sea, character experiences, and adult-only spaces so parents get a break.
Watch out: Usually the highest fares among the family lines. No casino, and limited appeal without children.
Best traditional cruise
Holland America Line, Rotterdam (Pinnacle class)
Why: Mid-size ships, a slower pace, good live music and deep experience in Alaska. It suits older travelers and multigenerational trips.
Watch out: Quiet evenings and fewer activities for teens.
Best mid-price all-rounder
Princess Cruises, Sun Princess
Why: Sits between the mass-market lines and Celebrity on price and feel, with the widest Alaska program of any line.
Watch out: Its ships vary a lot in age. Check which ship you're booking, not only the line.
Best for flexible dining
Norwegian Cruise Line, Norwegian Prima
Why: No fixed dinner times, lots of restaurant choice, and newer ships with more space per guest than the line's older fleet.
Watch out: Many of the best restaurants cost extra, and fares vary a lot depending on which perks you add.
Best value in Europe
MSC Cruises, MSC Seascape
Why: Low fares, big modern ships and a strong Mediterranean program, plus the MSC Yacht Club for a ship-within-a-ship upgrade.
Watch out: Food and service are less consistent than on the lines above it, and the onboard feel is more international than American.
Best budget cruise line
Carnival Cruise Line, Mardi Gras (Excel class)
Why: The lowest fares on this list, short sailings from many US ports and a relaxed, fun-first onboard feel.
Watch out: Crowded ships on popular sailings and more upsells. Dining is simple rather than memorable.
Why the top three rank where they do
Celebrity first. It doesn’t have the best food (Oceania does) or the most to do (Royal Caribbean does), but it has no weak category for most adults. The ships are modern, dinner is a step up from the mass-market lines, and the fare still sits closer to Princess than to a luxury line. Oceania second. It is the best food line in this group by a clear margin, and it includes its specialty restaurants in every fare. It ranks below Celebrity only because it suits a narrower group: people who plan around meals and ports and don’t need evening entertainment. Oceania, for the lines on this list. Its specialty restaurants are included in the fare instead of costing extra each night, and the menus are the main reason people choose it.
Among the rest, Celebrity has the strongest main dining room, Virgin Voyages has the most varied restaurants (all included, no main dining room), and Holland America is a steady choice for a traditional dinner.
