Norwegian Getaway was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, and delivered in January 2014, a year after its twin, Norwegian Breakaway. Its hull art is by the Miami artist David “LEBO” Le Batard. A 2024 refit redesigned staterooms, added a full-service Starbucks and a new live-rock venue, Syd Norman’s Pour House, and brought in Starlink internet.

Who it suits

First-time cruisers who want to try a big ship without paying for the newest one. A 3- or 4-night Bahamas trip on Getaway is a cheap way to find out whether you like cruising. Our short cruise guide compares other quick trips.

Groups and friends who care about bars, live music and places to eat more than rides. The Waterfront, the ice bar and Syd Norman’s Pour House give the ship a lively evening scene.

Gulf Coast drivers. From November 2027 Getaway sails week-long Western Caribbean round trips from New Orleans, which saves a flight for much of the South.

Who should look elsewhere: families who want the biggest attractions. The Breakaway Plus ships, such as Norwegian Joy, add a race track and more.

Standout features

• The Waterfront: a quarter-mile outdoor promenade lined with restaurants, bars and lounges. On a warm-weather route it’s one of the best features of the Breakaway design.
• Aqua Park: Free Fall slides, which NCL bills as the fastest waterslides at sea, plus The Whip.
• Sports Complex: a multi-level area with a ropes course and The Plank, which sticks out 8 feet over the side of the ship.
• Skyy Vodka Ice Bar: seats and glasses made of ice. Entry costs extra.
• Shows: Bring Back the ’90s and Rumours, a Fleetwood Mac tribute, plus game shows such as Deal or No Deal and Wheel of Fortune.

Cabins to pick, cabins to avoid

Getaway has inside, oceanview, balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Studio cabins, plus The Haven, NCL’s gated suite complex with its own restaurant, lounge and 24-hour butler service.

Pick:

• A Studio if you’re traveling alone: priced for one, with a lounge shared by Studio guests.
• An inside cabin on a short Bahamas trip, where you’ll spend little time in the room and the savings are real.
• A midship balcony for a Western Caribbean week, when sea days make a private outdoor space worth more.

Avoid or think twice:

• Cabins below the Aqua Park and Sports Complex, which can be noisy during the day.
• Cabins close to the nightlife venues if you go to bed early.
• Forward and aft cabins if you’re prone to seasickness. Midship on a deck with cabins above and below is the quietest, steadiest choice.

Dining and activities

Included: three main dining rooms, the buffet, and casual cafés, grills and on-the-go options.

Specialty restaurants cost extra: Ocean Blue (seafood, on The Waterfront), La Cucina (Italian), Moderno Churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse), Teppanyaki and NCL’s French restaurant. Bars include the Sugarcane Mojito Bar, O’Sheehan’s, the Sunset Bar, Spice H2O and the adults-only Vibe Beach Club.

Norwegian’s Free at Sea fare bundle can add specialty dining, an open bar, Starlink Wi-Fi and a shore excursion credit, and Free at Sea Plus adds more for a daily fee. Where Norwegian Getaway sails in 2026–2027

• Fall 2026 to April 2027, Bahamas from Miami and Port Canaveral: 3- to 5-day cruises calling at Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island.
• Spring and summer 2027, Bahamas and Caribbean from Port Canaveral: more 3- to 5-day sailings. NCL lists a 5-day trip from Port Canaveral calling at Great Stirrup Cay and Puerto Plata.

Sister ships

Getaway’s only true sister is Norwegian Breakaway, which entered service in 2013 and shares its layout, including The Waterfront. Breakaway sails from Boston in 2026 and 2027, so the pair cover very different routes. The later Breakaway Plus ships (Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore) grew the design with more attractions.
