Norwegian Gem is the fourth and last Jewel-class ship. Meyer Werft built it at Papenburg, Germany, and delivered it in October 2007. It’s 965 feet long. NCL gives 2,388 guests, while Wikipedia’s older figure is 2,394. Both count double occupancy, so a full ship can carry more.

Who it suits

Port-focused cruisers. Gem’s value is where it goes. In 2027 and 2028 that means the Greek Isles, the Panama Canal and Bermuda.

Couples and older travelers. A ship this size has fewer crowds than the 4,000-guest NCL ships. It also keeps a traditional mix of theater shows, bars and a casino.

Tampa-area cruisers on a budget. Short Bahamas trips from Tampa in early 2027 have the lowest total fares on this ship in our November 2026 snapshot.

What changed in Norwegian Gem’s 2026 refit?

Norwegian Gem had a routine drydock in April and May 2026, finishing at Marseille, France, and returned to service on May 11. The main change is the adults-only Vibe Beach Club on Deck 14, with over 50 loungers and seven private cabanas. The spa’s Thermal Suite was refreshed too.

Cruise Industry News also reports updates to the hot tub and Thalassotherapy pool. It lists a Charcoal Sauna, Ice Room, Salt Room, IV Lounge and Four-Senses Loungers as new on both Gem and Norwegian Jade.

CruiseDeckPlans reports 20 new cabins, 10 oceanview on Deck 6 and 10 balcony on Deck 12, built where the library, card room and meeting rooms used to be. NCL’s own announcements we read don’t confirm this, so don’t plan on a library until you’ve checked.

Norwegian Gem cabins to pick and avoid

The best cabin on Norwegian Gem for most guests is a midship balcony on Deck 9 or 10, where the deck plans show cabins and no public venues. Greek Isles cruisers get the most from the balcony. Budget cruisers on Bahamas trips can take an inside cabin, since they’ll be ashore or on deck most of the day.

Pick:

• A midship balcony on Deck 9 or 10 for the Mediterranean or the Panama Canal.
• An oceanview or inside cabin on short Caribbean trips.
• The Haven for a private sundeck in a quieter part of the ship. Its largest suite is the three-bedroom Garden Villa.

Avoid or think twice:

• Deck 11 cabins directly under the Deck 12 pools, which can hear deck noise.
• Deck 8 cabins close to O’Sheehan’s and Cagney’s.
• Cabins at the far forward or aft ends if you get seasick.

Dining and activities

The included restaurants are Magenta and Grand Pacific (main dining rooms), the Garden Café buffet, O’Sheehan’s and Topsiders. Specialty restaurants include Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, La Cucina, Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki, and they carry a charge.

Where does Norwegian Gem sail in 2026–2027?

Norwegian Gem sails from Tampa until April 2027, then spends May to October 2027 on seven-night Greek Isles and Adriatic cruises from Athens and Ravenna. CruiseBound then lists Panama Canal cruises from Miami in winter 2027/28, and NCL moves it to Philadelphia in April 2028.
