The Cruising Insider

Cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico: lines, ships and the home-port piers

Cruises from San Juan are mostly 7-night Southern and Eastern Caribbean round trips, and Royal Caribbean is the only line that sails them all year. Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess, Virgin Voyages and Disney add ships for part of the year, mainly in winter. Most cruises that start here board at the Pan American piers in Isla Grande, across the channel from Old San Juan.

Book it if

  • You've done the Bahamas and Cozumel and want the southern islands in one week.
  • You like port days more than sea days.
  • You'd enjoy a night or two in Old San Juan before or after the cruise.

Skip it if

  • You want to drive to the ship. There is no cruise parking inside the port.
  • You want Royal Caribbean's biggest ships. Its San Juan ships are the small, older Vision class.
  • You're sailing in summer and want a choice of lines. Most of them come only for the winter.

Where cruises from San Juan board

San Juan has two groups of cruise piers, both run by San Juan Cruise Port, and they do different jobs.

Pan American piers (home port)
Two berths, East and West, in Isla Grande, across the channel from Old San Juan. The port calls this its homeport district, built for ships that start and end cruises here.
Old San Juan piers
Piers 3 and 4 on Calle Marina, at the foot of the old town. Mostly used by ships visiting for the day; the port says Pier 4 also handles some home-port sailings.
From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
About 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare, depending on traffic.
Parking
None inside the port. The public Covadonga lot is across from the Old San Juan piers, and there are private lots nearby.
Season
Year round on Royal Caribbean. Most other lines sail from late fall to spring.

Your boarding documents name the pier. Check them before you get in a taxi, because the two pier areas are on opposite sides of the channel and it is not a walk between them.

Getting to the port and parking

Nearly everyone flies in. The port says a taxi or rideshare from the airport is the easiest way to arrive and puts the fare at around $24 to $30 (the port’s estimate, checked October 2026). Public buses are cheaper, but the port doesn’t recommend them with luggage: they run infrequently and can take over an hour.

If you live on the island and drive, plan around the Covadonga lot or a private lot. The port publishes no rates and no reservation system for cruise parking, so call the lot before sailing day.

Our San Juan cruise port guide covers what to do in Old San Juan and where to stay near the piers.

The 7-day cruise from Puerto Rico

The standard cruise from San Juan is a 7-night round trip, and there are two broad versions.

  • Southern Caribbean. The reason most people fly here. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Disney all sell 7-night Southern Caribbean cruises from San Juan, and the routes reach islands such as Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, Aruba and Curaçao. Disney’s fall 2027 sailing on the Wish, for example, calls at Aruba, St. Maarten, Bonaire and Dominica.
  • Eastern Caribbean and the Virgin Islands. Shorter hops to St. Thomas, Tortola and St. Maarten, usually mixed with one or two southern islands. Norwegian Prima’s routes work this way. If you want a cruise from Puerto Rico to the Virgin Islands, look for St. Thomas or Tortola on the itinerary.

One-way cruises exist too, and they need more planning. Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas sails 7-night trips between San Juan and Colón, Panama, in our snapshot. Disney ends its late 2027 visits with short repositioning cruises from San Juan to Florida. Each fall, Royal Caribbean also ends its Baltimore season with one-way sailings that finish in San Juan.

For how these routes compare with a week from the mainland, see our Caribbean cruise guide.

Three insider picks

1. Fly in the day before. A home port you reach by plane leaves no margin for a delayed flight, and the ship’s next stop is another island. A night in Old San Juan or Condado also gives you the forts and the old town, which a sailing-day arrival doesn’t.

2. Pick the ship, not only the line. Royal Caribbean’s San Juan ships are among the smallest and oldest it sails. They have the lowest fares from San Juan in our snapshot and no water park. Norwegian Prima is a much newer, bigger ship on similar routes. Our Norwegian vs Royal Caribbean comparison covers how the two lines differ.

3. Count the islands. Itineraries sold under the same name can differ by two or three ports. Compare the port list for your exact sailing date, and check how many hours the ship stays at each stop.

Cruises from San Juan FAQ

What cruise lines sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico?

Royal Caribbean sails from San Juan all year. For 2026–2027, Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess and Virgin Voyages also base ships here for part of the year, and Disney has a few sailings in late 2027 and spring 2028.

Do I need a passport for a cruise from Puerto Rico?

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens on a closed-loop cruise, one that begins and ends at the same U.S. port, can re-enter the United States with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. A round trip from San Juan fits that rule, but CBP also warns that the islands you visit may require a passport, and one-way cruises have different rules. Confirm with your cruise line and bring a passport if you have one. More in our no-passport cruises guide.

Which pier do cruises from San Juan leave from?

Most cruises that start in San Juan use the Pan American piers in Isla Grande. Some use Pier 4 in Old San Juan. Your boarding documents give the pier for your sailing.

Is there parking at the San Juan cruise port?

Not inside the port. San Juan Cruise Port points drivers to the public Covadonga lot across from the Old San Juan piers and to private lots nearby. It doesn’t publish rates.

Are there cheap cruises from San Juan?

The lowest fares from San Juan in our snapshot are on Royal Caribbean’s Vision-class ships. Remember to add the flight and a hotel night, which a cruise from a port you can drive to doesn’t need.

Does Carnival cruise from Puerto Rico?

We found no Carnival Cruise Line home-port sailings from San Juan for 2026–2027. Carnival ships visit San Juan on cruises that start elsewhere, including first calls by Carnival Firenze in April 2027 and Carnival Festivale in June 2027. See our Carnival guide.
