The Disney Magic was Disney Cruise Line’s first ship. It was built by Fincantieri in Marghera, Italy, and entered service on July 30, 1998. It holds about 1,750 guests at double occupancy and up to about 2,700 with every berth filled. Two big refits have kept it current. In 2013, in dry dock in Cádiz, Spain, it gained a “ducktail” extension at the stern, the AquaDunk slide, the AquaLab splash area and Marvel’s Avengers Academy. In 2023, in Freeport, Bahamas, it got shore power, refreshed staterooms and Concierge lounge, and the adults-only Soul Cat Lounge, a jazz club based on Pixar’s Soul.

Who it suits

Families who want Disney in Alaska. The Magic and its sister Wonder are Disney’s only Alaska ships.

Families in Texas and the West. Sailing from Galveston or San Diego saves a flight to Florida. For other lines on the West Coast, see our Los Angeles and Long Beach cruise guide.

Travelers who prefer a smaller ship. At under 3,000 guests the Magic is much easier to get around than a 4,000-guest ship.

Who should look elsewhere: anyone booking for the ship’s features. The Disney Wish and Disney Treasure have more to do on board.

Standout features

• Rotational dining across Lumière’s (French), Rapunzel’s Royal Table and Animator’s Palate, with your servers moving with you.
• Palo, the adults-only Italian restaurant, booked separately. Some specialty restaurants carry a charge, so check when you book.
• AquaDunk, a drop slide, plus the AquaLab splash area and Funnel Vision, a large LED screen on the funnel.
• Walt Disney Theatre with Broadway-style Disney shows; recent productions include Tangled: The Musical and Disney Dreams: An Enchanted Classic. Line-ups change, so check the ship’s entertainment page before you sail.
• Soul Cat Lounge, an adults-only jazz bar added in 2023.

Cabins to pick, cabins to avoid

Pick:

• Midship verandah rooms with staterooms above and below. On Alaska cruises a verandah is worth the extra for glacier days.
• Rooms 6134, 6634, 7120 and 7620, which are sold as Navigator’s Verandahs (category 7A, normally a partly enclosed verandah) but which cabin guides and past guests report have standard open verandahs with only a slight obstruction.

Avoid or think twice:

• Deck 8 rooms directly under the pool deck (DCL Guide flags these), where deck chairs are moved early.
• The very forward and aft rooms if you’re prone to seasickness, especially on open-water sections of Alaska or Pacific itineraries.

Dining and activities

Disney’s rotational dining is included, as are the buffet, quick-service food and soft drinks at the drink stations. Alcohol, adults-only dining, Wi-Fi, gratuities, spa and shore excursions are extra, as across the Disney fleet. On Alaska and Mexico itineraries, excursions are a bigger part of the budget than on a Bahamas trip.

Disney Magic cruise ship itinerary 2026–2027

• October 2026: San Diego. Three- to seven-night cruises to ports such as Catalina Island, Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.
• November 2026 to April 2027: Galveston, Texas. Western Caribbean cruises to ports such as Cozumel and Progreso.
• Summer 2027: Alaska from Vancouver. Six-, seven- and eight-night cruises, with sailings on sale from mid-May.
• Fall 2027 to spring 2028: three- to seven-night Baja and Mexican Riviera cruises from San Diego, a 14-night Panama Canal repositioning cruise, then four- to seven-night cruises from Galveston.

Sister ships

The Magic’s only sister is the Disney Wonder (1999). They share a layout and most features, and both sail Mexico from San Diego in fall 2026 and Alaska from Vancouver in summer 2027. The Wonder has Tiana’s Place and Triton’s in its dining rotation where the Magic has Rapunzel’s Royal Table and Lumière’s.
