European river cruises 2026–2027: which river, which line, which season
For a first European river cruise, book an 8-day Rhine or Danube sailing on a ship of under 200 guests: those two rivers have the most departures, the most lines and the easiest flights from the US. Choose the Seine, the Rhône or the Douro if you want France or Portugal, and a Christmas market sailing if you want December. Between the big lines, Viking is the default, AmaWaterways and Avalon put more in the fare or the cabin, and Celebrity joins the rivers in 2027.
Book it if
- You want to see several countries in a week without packing and unpacking.
- You'd rather walk into a town center from the ship than take a bus from a cruise port.
- You like a quiet ship with a guided tour in port included in the fare.
Skip it if
- You want an ocean ship's restaurants, theaters and water parks. River ships have room for none of that.
- Your dates are fixed in late summer or early autumn and you can't live with itinerary changes. Low water forced bus transfers and ship swaps on the Rhine and the Danube in 2026.
- You are on the tightest budget. Our Europe ocean cruise guide covers cheaper ways to see the coast.
A European river cruise is a different trip from an ocean cruise in Europe. The ship is small, it ties up in or near the town center, and there is a new place almost every day. This guide picks the river first, then the line, then the season.
What a European river ship is like
River ships are built to fit under bridges and through locks, so they are long, low and narrow. Viking’s standard Longships are 135 meters long and carry up to 190 guests in 95 cabins. Every AmaWaterways ship carries fewer than 200 guests. There is no casino, no theater and no kids’ club. Evenings are a lecture, a local performance or a quiet drink in the lounge.
That makes river cruising a good fit for adults who care most about the towns, and a poor fit for families with young children.
Which European river to cruise
The main rivers, and what each suits. The examples are Viking’s 2027 itineraries; the other lines sail most of the same routes.
- RhineThe classic first river cruise: castles, vineyards and the Middle Rhine gorge. Viking's Rhine Getaway runs 8 days from Basel to Amsterdam.
- DanubeVienna and Budapest in one week. Viking's Danube Waltz runs 8 days from Budapest to Passau. Longer trips continue east to Romania.
- Rhine, Main and Danube togetherViking's Grand European Tour runs 15 days end to end through Germany. Pick it if you have two weeks and want both rivers.
- SeineParis and the Normandy countryside. Viking's Paris & the Heart of Normandy is an 8-day round trip from Paris.
- Rhône and SaôneProvence and Burgundy, food and wine. Viking's Lyon & Provence runs 8 days between Avignon and Lyon.
- DouroTerraced port-wine vineyards and the smallest ships. Viking's Portugal's River of Gold runs 10 days from Lisbon to Porto.
- ElbeBerlin to Prague in 10 days on Viking's Elegant Elbe. Fewer ships than the Rhine or the Danube.
- Holland and Belgium waterwaysShort distances, windmills and Flemish towns. Viking runs Holland & Belgium and Tulips & Windmills from Amsterdam.
Rhine or Danube for a first river cruise? Pick the Rhine for scenery, the Danube for cities. The Rhine’s best stretch is the gorge between castles and vineyards; the Danube’s highlights are Vienna and Budapest. If you can’t decide, a Rhine-to-Danube trip covers both.
A Seine river cruise is not a Paris boat tour. Many people searching for a Seine river cruise want a one-hour sightseeing boat in Paris. The river cruises on this page are week-long trips with cabins, from Paris down to Normandy.
European river cruise lines compared
- VikingSails every main river in Europe, from the Rhine and Danube to the Douro, the Elbe and the Seine. A shore excursion in each port is included in the fare.
- AmaWaterwaysFewer than 200 guests per ship. Wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, guided excursions and Wi-Fi are in the price, and it runs dedicated wine cruises.
- Avalon WaterwaysMost cabins on its ships are suites with a wall of windows that opens. Sails the Danube, Rhine, Main, Moselle, Rhône, Saône, Seine, Garonne and Douro.
- Celebrity River CruisesTwo new ships, Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, sail 33 seven-night Rhine and Danube cruises in 2027. Celebrity has said the fares will be all-inclusive, with drinks, Wi-Fi and an excursion in each port.
Other lines on the same rivers include Uniworld, Scenic, Riviera Travel and Trafalgar. Trafalgar’s ships, for example, carry 128 passengers.
Our pick for most first-timers is the line that sails the route and dates you want. On the Rhine and the Danube the ships are similar in size and the towns are the same. If you want drinks with meals and Wi-Fi in the price, look at AmaWaterways first. If cabin size matters most, look at Avalon. Our luxury and small-ship cruise guide compares the ocean lines in the same price range.
Best time for a European river cruise
Christmas markets (late November and December). Christmas market cruises are some of the most popular river trips. Trafalgar’s 2026 Rhine and Danube Christmas sailings start on November 25, 2026, with the last departures on December 16. Avalon has more than 40 Christmas departures in 2026 across 19 itineraries on the Danube, the Rhine and the Main. Viking lists eight Christmas itineraries for 2027, from Christmas on the Rhine (Amsterdam to Basel) to Christmastime in Paris & Normandy. Our Christmas and New Year cruise guide compares them with holiday sailings at sea.
Late summer and autumn: the low-water risk. In dry years the Rhine and the Danube can fall too low for ships to pass. In July 2026, ships were stranded north of Budapest, Avalon cancelled a small number of departures, and Viking and AmaWaterways warned guests of itinerary changes. By late September, reports said normal sailing on the worst stretches near Cologne, Koblenz, Mannheim, Regensburg, Passau and Budapest was not expected before mid-October 2026. What lines did:
- Ship swaps. Viking bused guests past the shallowest stretch to an identical sister ship waiting on the other side.
- Bus or train transfers between ports, or a moved start or end city.
- New routes or cancellations. Riviera Travel and AmaWaterways sailed north from Düsseldorf into the Netherlands and Belgium, with a future cruise credit or a refund for guests who didn’t want the new route. Scenic and Riviera cancelled some sailings.
Low water doesn’t cancel most cruises, but it can change the trip. If you book a late-summer sailing, buy travel insurance that covers itinerary changes and read your line’s low-water policy before you pay.
How long is a European river cruise, and what does it cost?
Eight days (seven nights) is the standard length on the Rhine, the Danube, the Seine and the Rhône. Ten-day trips cover the Douro and the Elbe, and two-week trips such as the Grand European Tour cross the continent. Viking’s longest Europe itinerary, European Sojourn, runs 23 days from Amsterdam to Bucharest.
River cruise fares are higher per night than mainstream ocean fares, but more is included. Viking listed its 8-day Rhine Getaway and Danube Waltz from $2,399 per person and the 15-day Grand European Tour from $4,999 for 2027 departures (checked October 2026). Christmas sailings started higher, from $2,999 for 8 days. Compare what each fare includes: drinks with meals, excursions, Wi-Fi and tips vary by line.
Departure ports and getting there
There are no US departures. You fly to Europe and join the ship in a river city. The common start and end points:
- Amsterdam and Basel for the Rhine.
- Budapest, Passau, Regensburg and Nuremberg for the Danube and the Main.
- Paris for the Seine, Avignon and Lyon for the Rhône.
- Porto and Lisbon for the Douro, Bordeaux for the Garonne.
- Berlin and Prague for the Elbe.
Most routes are one-way, so book an open-jaw flight (into the start city, home from the end city) and plan an extra night before you sail.
Places European river cruises visit
- Amsterdam: the start or end of most Rhine cruises.
- Cologne, Koblenz and the Middle Rhine: German cities, then the castle-lined gorge.
- Basel: the Swiss end of most Rhine cruises.
- Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest: three capitals on one Danube week.
- Passau and Regensburg: medieval towns on the upper Danube.
- Paris and Normandy: the Seine, on round trips from Paris.
- Lyon and Avignon: Burgundy and Provence on the Rhône.
- Porto and the Douro Valley: port-wine country in northern Portugal.
If you’d rather see the coast on an ocean ship, our European cruises guide and Mediterranean cruise guide cover those routes.
European river cruise FAQ
What are the best river cruises in Europe?
For a first trip, an 8-day Rhine or Danube cruise on Viking, AmaWaterways or Avalon. Pick the Rhine for castles and scenery, the Danube for Vienna and Budapest. For food and wine, the Rhône or the Douro.
How long is a Rhine river cruise?
Usually 8 days. Viking’s Rhine Getaway runs 8 days from Basel to Amsterdam, and combined Rhine and Danube trips run about two weeks.
When are Christmas market river cruises?
From late November through mid-December. Trafalgar’s 2026 Christmas sailings start on November 25, and Avalon runs more than 40 Christmas departures on the Danube, the Rhine and the Main.
Does low water cancel European river cruises?
Sometimes, but more often it changes them. In 2026 lines swapped guests between sister ships, added bus or train transfers and sailed different routes, and a few departures were cancelled. Late summer and autumn carry the most risk.
Is Celebrity starting river cruises?
Yes. Celebrity River Cruises sails 33 seven-night Rhine and Danube cruises in 2027 on two new ships, Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker.
Are European river cruises good for families?
Not for young children. River ships have no kids’ clubs, pools or shows of the ocean-ship kind. Families do better on an ocean ship; see our family cruise guide.
