Silversea cruise reviews: is Silversea a good cruise line?
Yes. Silversea is one of the three best luxury lines in our rankings, with all-suite ships of 100 to 728 guests, a butler in every suite, and drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and every restaurant in the fare, plus the strongest luxury expedition fleet at sea. Skip it if you want shore excursions in the fare on an ordinary ocean cruise: unless you book the All-Inclusive Plus fare, which adds a credit, tours are extra, and so are flights.
Book it if
- You want a butler without paying for a top suite. Silversea includes one in every suite category.
- You're planning a polar or Galapagos trip. Expedition fares include the landings, excursions and gear.
- You want a relaxed evening dress code. Jackets are optional on every night since June 2026.
Skip it if
- You take a tour in every port and want them in the fare. Regent Seven Seas includes them; Silversea doesn't.
- You're traveling with children who need kids' clubs. These are adult-oriented ships.
- You're comparing headline fares. Check which of Silversea's three fare types a price is for first.
Silversea cruise review scorecard
Our verdict in one line: Silversea is the luxury line to pick when you want the most service on board and the widest choice of places, from a Mediterranean week to an Antarctica landing. It sits with Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn at the top of our best luxury cruise lines. The catch is ashore: on ocean cruises the standard fare doesn’t cover tours, so price that in before you compare.
| Criterion | Silversea |
|---|---|
| Value | Good Fares are among the highest at sea, but drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and specialty dining are included, so the bill at the end stays small unless you buy a lot of tours. |
| Food | Strong Every restaurant is included, along with in-suite breakfast, so there is no surcharge tier to plan around. |
| Cabins | Strong Every room is a suite with butler service, and there are no inside cabins on any ship. |
| Ship and onboard | Good Small, uncrowded ships, with the Nova-class pair the newest and largest at 728 guests; several classic ships date from 2000 to 2009 and evenings are quiet. |
| Itineraries | Strong The 2027–2028 collection has 414 voyages, 143 of them expeditions to Antarctica, the Arctic, the Galapagos and the remote Pacific. |
| What is included | Good Drinks, butler, restaurants, Wi-Fi and gratuities in every fare; ocean-cruise excursions only as a credit on the All-Inclusive Plus fare, and flights never. |
| Fit | Good An excellent fit for couples, older travelers and expedition-minded guests, and a poor one for families and anyone who wants nightlife. |
Strengths
- A butler in every suite. Silversea says it is the only cruise line to include butler service in every suite category, and it restocks your minibar daily.
- A short list of extras. Silversea’s own list, checked October 2026: champagne, wines, beers and premium spirits in the bars and your suite, the specialty restaurants, in-suite breakfast, Wi-Fi, the fitness center, lectures and gratuities.
- The expedition fleet. Four expedition ships of 100 to 274 guests sail to Antarctica, the Arctic and Greenland, the Galapagos and the far Pacific. Expedition fares include the landings, Zodiac and kayak outings and the expedition team, so the onboard and ashore experience is covered in one price. Our Antarctica, Arctic and Galápagos cruise guide compares it with the other expedition lines.
- Small ships. The two largest, Silver Nova and Silver Ray, carry 728 guests; the smallest classic ships carry 392.
- A relaxed dress code. For voyages from June 1, 2026, evenings are Elegant Casual, with up to two Formal Optional nights on 8 to 14-day voyages. Jackets are optional throughout, and Elegant Casual clothes are still fine on Formal Optional nights.
Weaknesses
- Tours cost extra on ocean cruises. Since September 2025 Silversea sells three fares. Only All-Inclusive Plus adds a shore excursion credit on classic voyages, and its value depends on the voyage. On the All-Inclusive and Last-Minute fares you buy each tour.
- Fares are hard to compare. The Last-Minute fare is cheaper but is paid in full at booking with no refund, and All-Inclusive has a non-refundable deposit. Check which fare a quoted price is for.
- No flights. Air and transfers are sold separately on every fare.
- Older classic ships. Silver Shadow (2000), Silver Whisper (2001) and Silver Spirit (2009) are much older than the Nova class. Choose them for the route.
- Quiet evenings. There are no big production shows, waterslides or late-night scene.
Silversea Alaska cruise reviews: what to expect
Silversea’s Alaska program is one-way voyages between Vancouver and Seward on Silver Moon and Silver Whisper: 29 voyages from May 27 to early September 2027, including seven-night Inside Passage routes with calls such as Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Sitka. Glacier days are at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Bay, with Tracy Arm on some sailings.
Two things to know before you book. Silversea is not one of the lines permitted to enter Glacier Bay National Park, and because the cruises are one way you fly into one city and home from another. If Glacier Bay is the point of your trip, our best cruise lines for Alaska ranking names the lines that go in. For the season and the ports, see the Alaska cruise guide and our Vancouver cruise port guide.
Who Silversea suits
- Couples who want a suite, a butler and an open bar without counting drinks. Our couples cruise guide sets Silversea against the other luxury lines.
- Senior travelers on long voyages. Small ships, all suites and a quiet pace suit older guests, and Silversea is one of the picks in our senior cruises guide. Expedition landings can be physically demanding, so ask how active they are before you book one.
- Expedition travelers who want luxury after the landing. This is where Silversea has the fewest real rivals.
- World and grand voyage travelers. Silver Dawn sails the 2027 world cruise; our world cruise guide compares the 2027 voyages.
It doesn’t suit families with young children, travelers who want big-ship entertainment, or anyone shopping mainly on price.
Silversea against the alternatives
- Silversea vs Regent Seven Seas: both include drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and every restaurant. Regent’s review explains why it ranks first for travelers who tour every day: unlimited excursions are in its fare. Silversea wins on butler service and expeditions.
- Silversea vs Seabourn: Seabourn is the closest match, with small all-suite ships and drinks and gratuities included. Choose on route and date.
- Silversea vs Viking: Viking costs much less and includes one excursion per port, but limits drinks to wine and beer with meals and doesn’t include tips.
- Silversea vs Explora Journeys: Explora is the newer, design-led rival: Explora I has 456 suites, more than any Silversea ship, and the line has no expedition fleet.
Our all-inclusive cruise guide lists what each fare actually covers. Fleet details and the full 2026–2027 routes are in our Silversea cruises guide.
Silversea cruise reviews FAQ
Is Silversea a good cruise line?
Yes, for travelers who want a small all-suite ship with a butler, drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and every restaurant in the fare, or a luxury expedition. It’s weaker value if you want tours included on an ocean cruise, and it isn’t built for families.
Are Silversea cruises worth the money?
If you drink with meals, use the specialty restaurants and would tip on another line, the gap with a cheaper fare narrows a lot. On ocean cruises, add tours and flights to the Silversea price, or book All-Inclusive Plus for an excursion credit, before you compare.
Is Silversea good for seniors?
It’s one of the better choices: small ships, all suites, a butler and a quiet pace. Expedition voyages involve Zodiac landings and walks, so check the activity level of the trip you pick.
Is Silversea formal?
Less than it used to be. For voyages from June 1, 2026, evenings are Elegant Casual, with Formal Optional nights only on voyages of eight days or more. Jackets are optional on every night.
Are these Silversea cruise reviews based on passenger ratings?
No. This is our editorial review, graded on the criteria in how we rate cruises and based on Silversea’s published inclusions, fare terms, fleet and itineraries. We don’t publish star ratings or passenger scores.
