Nile cruise 2026–2027: which line, which route, which month

A Nile cruise for most US travelers is a 12-day package: three nights in Cairo for the pyramids, a flight to Luxor, then about a week on a small river ship between Luxor and Aswan. Viking's Pharaohs & Pyramids is the best-known version, listed from $6,999 per person, cruise only (checked October 2026); AmaWaterways and Avalon sell the same shape of trip on smaller ships. Go between November and February, when Luxor's average high is in the low to mid 70s °F, and avoid June to August, when it passes 100 °F.

Book it if

  • Ancient Egypt is the reason for the trip and you want an Egyptologist with you at each site.
  • You'd rather unpack once than move hotel between Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan.
  • You can travel between November and February, the coolest months.

Skip it if

  • You can only travel in summer. Luxor's average high in July is about 106 °F.
  • You want sea days, pools and shows. Nile ships are small and the days start early for temple visits.
  • You are on a tight budget. Packaged Nile trips from the US lines cost more per day than most ocean cruises.

A Nile river cruise is a temple trip, not a ship trip. The boats are small, the days start early, and almost every stop between Luxor and Aswan is a site you have seen in pictures. This guide picks the month first, then the line, then the type of boat.

How a Nile cruise works

Nearly every Nile cruise sold to US travelers follows the same plan. Viking’s 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids is a good example:

  • Cairo first. About three nights in a hotel, with the Giza pyramids, the Sphinx, Sakkara and the new Grand Egyptian Museum, which opened its Tutankhamun galleries in November 2025.
  • A flight to Luxor. The ships don’t sail from Cairo on these trips. You fly south and board in Luxor.
  • About a week on the river. A round trip from Luxor with stops at Dendera, the Valley of the Kings, Esna, Aswan, Philae, Kom Ombo and Edfu.
  • A flight back to Cairo for a last night before the flight home.

So the “Nile cruise from Cairo” most people search for is a package that starts in Cairo. The sailing part is the stretch between Luxor and Aswan, sometimes called the Upper Nile.

Nile cruise lines compared

Three river lines with US sales offices run their own Nile ships. Egyptian hotel groups and local operators run many more, from large cruise boats to small sailing dahabiyas.

  • VikingThe biggest Nile fleet of the US linesViking lists 12 Egypt ships, including Viking Sobek, which carries 82 guests in 41 staterooms. Its Nile trips run 12 days (Pharaohs & Pyramids) or 19 days (Grand Nile Journey), and beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner are in the fare.
  • AmaWaterwaysSmaller ships, upscale Cairo hotelsAmaWaterways sells Secrets of Egypt & the Nile on AmaDahlia, AmaLilia and the new AmaNubia, which carries 76 guests in 38 staterooms and was due to enter service in late 2026. Cairo nights are at the Four Seasons or the St. Regis.
  • Avalon WaterwaysOne Nile shipAvalon lists MS Farah for its Egypt trips, alongside its much larger European fleet.

Which to pick? Choose Viking for the most departure dates and the 19-day trip with more time on the river. Choose AmaWaterways if the smallest ship and the hotel in Cairo matter most to you. If you already know one of these lines from Europe, the style on the Nile is close to what you know. Our European river cruise guide compares the lines on their home rivers.

Dahabiya Nile cruises

A dahabiya is a traditional Egyptian sailing boat with two masts that carries a small group, often 14 guests or fewer. Dahabiya trips usually sail between Esna, south of Luxor, and Aswan in three to four nights, and can tie up at sites and villages the larger boats pass by, such as Gebel el Silsila. They are sold by Egyptian operators rather than the US river lines, so check what the price includes (guide, entry tickets, transfers) before you compare it with a Viking or Ama fare.

Luxury Nile cruises

The luxury Nile boats searchers ask about, such as the Oberoi Philae, Sonesta St. George and Mövenpick ships, belong to hotel groups and are booked either directly or through a tour company that adds the Cairo days and flights. They suit travelers who want to build their own trip rather than buy a package.

Best time for a Nile cruise

Luxor’s average daily highs (WMO 1991–2020 normals) explain the season:

  • November to February: the best months. Highs of about 73 °F in January and 76 °F in December. This is also the busiest and most expensive time, especially at Christmas and New Year.
  • March, April and October: warm. Highs of about 95 °F in April and 96 °F in October. Fine for early-morning temple visits; hard going at midday.
  • May to September: hot. About 106 °F in July. Some trips still run, but sightseeing is squeezed into the early morning.

August 2, 2027: the path of a total solar eclipse crosses Upper Egypt. NASA puts the longest totality of this eclipse at 6 minutes 23 seconds. Viking sells a 12-day Total Eclipse on the Nile trip for it, listed from $10,999 per person (checked October 2026). Expect it to be hot and to sell out early.

How long is a Nile cruise, and what does it cost?

  • 3 to 4 nights: one way between Luxor (or Esna) and Aswan, on Egyptian-run boats and dahabiyas, often sold as part of a wider tour.
  • 7 nights: A round trip from Luxor, the core of most US-sold packages.
  • 12 days: The usual full package with Cairo, such as Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids or AmaWaterways’ Secrets of Egypt & the Nile.
  • 19 days: Viking’s Grand Nile Journey, listed from $14,999 per person (checked October 2026).

Compare what the fare covers. Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids price is cruise only; it includes an excursion in every port, drinks with meals and Wi-Fi, but flights to Egypt and transfers are extra unless you buy Viking Air or catch an airfare offer. On Viking and AmaWaterways, Abu Simbel is an optional extra.

Departure points

  • Cairo: where almost every package starts and ends. Fly into Cairo International Airport.
  • Luxor: where most ships board. Packages include the flight from Cairo.
  • Aswan: the southern end of the cruising river, and the base for Philae and the optional trip to Abu Simbel.
  • Esna: the usual starting point for dahabiya trips.

There are no US departure ports for Nile cruises. For other river trips you can reach without a long flight, see our Mississippi river cruise guide.

Places a Nile cruise visits

  • Giza and Sakkara: the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Step Pyramid, on the Cairo days.
  • Luxor: Luxor and Karnak temples on the east bank.
  • The Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple: on Luxor’s west bank.
  • Dendera: the Temple of Hathor, a short trip from Qena.
  • Esna: the Temple of Khnum, and a lock on the river.
  • Edfu: the Temple of Horus, one of the best preserved in Egypt.
  • Kom Ombo: a double temple on a bend of the river.
  • Aswan: Philae, the Aswan Dam, a felucca sail and a Nubian village.

Nile cruise FAQ

Is it safe to take a Nile cruise?

The US State Department rates Egypt Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, in an advisory dated July 15, 2025. It says not to travel to the North and Middle Sinai, and to the Western Desert only with a licensed tour company. The Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan is not in either area. Check the current advisory before you book and again before you go.

What is the best Nile river cruise?

For a first trip, a 12-day package from one of the US river lines, because the Cairo hotel, the internal flights and the guides are all arranged. Pick Viking for the most dates and AmaWaterways for the smallest ships. A dahabiya suits travelers who want a very small group and a slower pace.

Is it better to cruise from Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?

The sites are the same either way. One-way trips on Egyptian boats run in both directions; the US lines mostly sail round trips from Luxor, so the direction isn’t a choice you make.

Can you take a Nile cruise from Cairo?

Most packages start in Cairo, but the ships board in Luxor after a short flight. The Cairo stretch of the river isn’t part of the usual cruise.

Does Viking do Nile cruises?

Yes. Viking lists 12 Egypt ships and sells Pharaohs & Pyramids (12 days), the Grand Nile Journey (19 days) and a 12-day trip for the August 2027 eclipse. Our Viking guide covers the line’s fares and ships.

Do I need a visa for a Nile cruise?

Yes. US citizens need a passport and an Egyptian tourist visa, which you can get online through Egypt’s official e-visa portal or on arrival at major airports. Check the current fee on the portal before you pay, and ask your cruise line whether it handles the visa for you.
